can you hear the fuel pump spinning up inside the tank?
dont foget to check the harness plug on the drivers side front of the engine
Gday, wow another dead (sick) td5.
This morning, I went out to grab a new globe for the defender, its started first go as usual, ran for 15-20 seconds (putting belt on etc) and then it spluttered to a stop.
Now it will not start again, turns over nothing else.
What I have checked,
- Fuses / relays all seem fine.
- Removed fuel filter, and fuel is being pumped and I can hear the pump (only 10-15k old)
- Put some "Start you bastard" down the snorkel, and it kicks over 1-2 times and once the vapor is gone, it just turns over and over.
- Checked oil in the harness, there was a little, but its been replaced so its just residual, removed and clean again.
Yesterday I did a 120k return trip from Syd to the Gong, all fine, no temp changes etc in the 40d heat?!
What else can I check, I am guessing its a fuel issue ??
Thanks in advance!
Cameron!

It sounds like fuel pump problems - possibly algae in the diesel. When I changed the fuel pump on my daughters TD5 Defender the strainer inside the white outer pump case was completely blocked with a green/black scum.
I am willing to bet that if I would have just cleaned this and replaced the fuel in the tank I would have been OK

Thanks for that I do not think its that, as its a new pump, I said 10-20k ago, but its more like 5-10k.
The pump is pumping, it put 10ltrs in a bucket really quickly, and I usually get my fuel from the same place, and since last fill, I have done 200kms.
If it was algae, it wouldnt have pumped so quick into the bucket I am guessing.
Hmmm! Thanks for your ideas thou!
If it's not the fuel end it could be the crank angel sensor.
The other thing is check your battery is good and not on the way out.
That said it does sound more like the fuel's not getting up the front end.
Have you followed the priming instructions in the owner's manual? Also I'm not sure where else you can break in to the fuel line but if its getting to the filter I'd be checking further forward.

Thanks for that, Battery is fine, its starting to go down now as I was turning it over alot, Yeah followed the priming instructions 3x full noise then start, but it was running fine yesterday ?!
I have some more mechanical minded friends coming over tomorrow, else I will get rovemechanical over asap![]()
as derick said, crank angle sensor! i un plugged mine when i did the clutch change, and it was the only thing i forgot when it was all back together... just cranked and cranked...nothing.....
cheers phil
if its not as simple as the front harness plug or the crank angle sensor plug coming off then its time to quickly whip the return line for the fuel system off from the engine and check the fuel coming from there and if the fuel is coming from there nicely then your firmly in the relm of electronic problems.
The crank angle sensor can be roughly checked by placing a led and 1K resistor (that will need confirmation Im a bit rusty on the resistor value and which terminals are which) across the terminals and if the led blinks when you spin the engine over then it shouldnt be that (but it can still be out of range) so that pretty much leaves you with something powering the ECU (or not) or a dead ECU.
