    D1 Brake Lights

    Hi All,

I stumbled across this site about a year ago and have learnt so much valuble info from you; technical advice, sourcing parts etc etc. . . so now I have a question of my own.

I just realised that the strange red glow coming from my car port the last 2 nights is the brake lights on my 97 D1 staying on. Ive taken it for a drive, fiddled with the brake pedal etc but no luck so Ive just pulled the fuse to turn them off.

Im not much of an auto electrician but would appreciate if anyone has any ideas on where I can start looking. Also, Im guessing its an electrical problem but could it be the brakes?

    Thanks
    Scott

If you've got a trailer socket, check it for a short.

    Hi,

Thanks for your quick replies and ideas. I took the camper trailer on hols last week ( rough, dirt road ), so I started with the trailer plug, gave it a good clean, put the fuse back in and the brake lights are now going off as they should. Hopefully thats the end of it.

That rough road has certainly given the old disco a good shake up, my 10 stacker cd player has just started working again after 3 years

    Thanks guys,
    Scott

    Hi Stormy,

Do you by any chance have a Tekonsha Voyager electric brake controller for your camper trailer? These have a known fault that can cause them to switch on the brake lamp circuit intermittently, whether the trailer is attached or not.

If this is the case, send me a PM and I may be able to give you some useful info.

If the Voyager has a grey label it will most likely be faulty.
The modified ones have a burgundy label.

Hi Shaker, yes it does have the grey label so it seems I have a faulty brake controller. Ill get in touch with them and see how I go. Id never heard of this problem but it seems alot of them have failed in this way. Ill let you know the result.

    Thanks,
    scott
