    Unhappy problems transfer case????

Hi All, My beautiful SHMBO bought me a 92 Disco today. Gee she really loves me......not. The reason she got it so cheap is because there is only drive with the diff lock engaged. Without diff lock, no drive or a grumbleing noise from the centre diff. Also droped a lot of gear oil on to the driveway. The owners book says the centre diff is an LT230R. An expensive job to repair or replace?? Gearbox itself seems fine. Bob H

LT230 is the transfer case as opposed to the centre diff as such.. Sounds like it may have a broken axle or cv, hence only having drive with the centre diff locked.

Where did the oil come from?

Not sure at the moment, but it looked to come from between the g/box and t/case. There is a noise from the front left wheel, I think, like the c/v joint not like turning right as I turned into my driveway.

With the centre diff lock disengaged try to drive off, have someone look underneath while doing this and see what tail shaft is turning.
If its the front I would be pulling the front lhs axle out.
Possibly a CV or Axle shouldnt be expensive if you can do the work yourself.
Ps wish my wife would buy me Land Rovers

Wish mine was able to afford one with no problems, but I'm thankful for what I've got. Better than not having one, isnt it. I'll try your suggestion ut the oil leak[river] also has me worried. Bob H

Had a good look under the veh today and s...tttttt. Front driveshaft coupling to transfer bx is about 2" out away from the t/box and as wobbly as all get out. Oil is understanderlby pouring out from there. Seems that the t/box will have to come out to asses the damage. Hopefully it wont be too expensive as I cant afford the approx $2000 to recondition it. Thanks to all who replied and anyone got a spare t/box they dont need??????? BobH

If you are lucky it could be the nut that holds the flange on has come undone. Solution, do it up. Oh and might be an idea to put another seal in.
