oops, I don't own ANY of those 'special' tools

As Dave says, it isn't really necessary, it just makes the job easier.

Reason I ask is my box will grind into 2nd (if im going too fast, though it shouldn't do it), will be a bit dodgy into 3rd, and is a bit hard to get into 1st. Reverse is a bit dodgy also.
I'm thinking of an exchange but I hear that its $2500 for all the work. Which is simply too much.
So can I do it myself? What tools do I need?
As stated by Justin and Dave, this is not the box to learn on - these are a little complicated, especially the reshimming. Getting the gearbox / transfer out is the easy bit. As well, you will be hard pressed to recognise worn or damaged parts.

$2500 may sound a bit steep but start to buy a few gears, synchro rings and a bearing / gasket set and see what that costs. Also you will have plenty of trips to and from the parts supplier.

I speak from experience as I replaced a main shaft in an R380 out of our '93 model some years ago and will never want to do it again.
