finally got to test the 3link kit this morning.
problem is ive been chasing an abs front left issue since the install.
during the install i removed the only shims under the sensor's to re gain my swivell pre load. .(030thou thick)
so today during some flexy stuff scouse told me there was diff oil ****ing out of the LHF swivell ball....he wasnt joking. there is a 2-3mm gap between the ball and the sealwhen its sitting level its wet but wont leak...
we shook the front of the car/wheel and steering... there isnt ANY movement anywhere??? so 2 of us are really confused...
and the tyre is on a lean compaired to the driverside... almost like the top bearing has collapsed?
what do the rest of you think it could be??
cheers phil

youve either busted the wheel bearings OR....
youve pooched the swivel assembly. jack the wheel up on that side and give it a rim rock check and see what moves.
More than likely it will be a setup issue that is resolvable by redoing the bearings and shimming of the swivel.
There is an aftermarket kit available with an offset bearing race that allows you to adjust the camber. I dont reccomend it and if you happen to have one of these and the race has rotated then thats the end result.
or you could just get used to being able to push it harder into a right hand turn....

Phil,
The lower brg is a taper roller, and can sometimes collapse and NOT show too much play as it will 'bind up' and the rollers can wedge themselves etc. However, removing that thick a set of shims means that there is a drastic failure somewhere. On the top swivel bush under the top pin is a thrust washer and a roller thrust brg and another thrust washer. The roller thrust brg could've failed, but unless you have ruined the top bronze guide bush BADLY then I think all the issues lie with the lower taper roller brg. You are no doubt aware that the preload for ABS swivels is roughly half of taper roller ones. Over tightening wil cause failure very quickly, and using one shot grease will end up with poor lube to the upper bush, it's basically the same scenario as the railko's in series3 and early 110/ defender.
Do it now phil before it falls off

wont be the wheel bearings as they havent been apart latley, they were apart when i busted a cv but that was months b4 i did the swivell preload.
all i did last was undo the top and bottom swivell pins, removed the top shim, cleaned the gasket surfaces and put it all back together, minus the top shim.

doin it right now JC!
ive had the swivells apart 4-5 times now and dont ever recall seeing any thrust washer only a funny steeped parralell roller bearing...way different to the S1 disco stuff.
off to the shed.
cheers phil
D1 ABS is the same as yours. From the inside out at the top, It should have a bushing pressed imto the top of the swivel ball, this has a ferrobestos flat awsher in the bottom with a lube hole in the middle, then a flat steel thrust washer, then the parrallel thrust race/ brg, then another flat washer, then the pin/sensor etc. The pin takes side thrust against the bronze insert in the top bushing, and vertical preload thrust is exerted on the parallel roller brg and the ferrobestos washer. As you can tell, running grease will provide inadequate lube for these components.

Have a look at the bottom pin that the slides up into the houseing with the bearing runing on the crome ball.
I had the same problem, striped the hub down and the pin was broken off the bit that bolts t the outside of the houseig...never seen it befor

so all them washers are under the bearing race?
the top bearing has crapped its selfand magnetized shavings have zeroed the air gap for the abs sensor..at least i know where my abs fault is
what sort of preload is to be set for the abs td5 bearings?? the shim i took out are at work so i cant measure them till i go down and get them.
b4 they were that loose that with all the steering rods disconnected the hub would fall backwards by its self.
cheers phil
