    3.5 V8 running temps 75-95oC ?

    Short story:
Coolant temp at idle a min or two after a short run around the block, 70-75oC
after a bit of a run up to about 93-95oC
    is this too hot?

    Long story:
I thought the engine ran OK but I recently fitted a new temp gauge,(old one died) now it seems to be running hot?
Courtesy of ebay I bought a temperature probe which I sat in the radiator coolant and let it idle and checked the probe temp and the gauge temp both read the same. So question is 70-75 too hot?

    I wouldn't have thought so.

Thermostat probably doesn't open until the 80's.

Hi Hang (or should that be "Mr Over"),

If anything I'd think 70 - 75 after the engine has properly warmed-up to be a bit too cool for a 3.5. Should probably have a thermostat that opens, and keeps the temp up to, the mid to high 80s.

Also, temps in the low to mid 90s when working hard are quite OK. In hot weather and working hard, up to 100 would be no cause for alarm but if it gets above 105, I'd perhaps be looking for cooling system problems.

    From the book
    Carby V8 .... 78 degree thermostat
    EFI V8 ..... 88 degree thermostat

For the EFI version try a 82 degree thermostat and see how it goes, as I don't like the motor running at 88c

I would be concerned about the 93-95c temp .... So check the degrees on your installed thermostat & rod the radiator for peace of mind

    thanks for all the advise.
I was under the mistaken???? understanding that if it runs to 95+, (ever) then it has issues and if it hits 100+ then STOP
Am I right in saying that as long as its only for a few minutes over 95, then it comes back down to the 80 range then no issues but if it hovers at 90-95 when on the road, (no real load) then there are issues?

    **BTW is the carby engine

How could I put this politely .... IMHO .... The description of the amount of Temp variances that your gauge is showing is a worry in itself .... Time for a new 4 core radiator

RUN THE MOTOR AT 78c (thermostat) .... And run a "Filter sock" in the top radiator hose ... to catch all the flakes of debris in the system

I could not express the amount of effort & thought that has taken up my time to get my EFI to run "economically" at this temp .... and you have it on a silver plater

I saw the other thread on Radiators .... Perth Radiator Center in Bayswater for rodding / filter socks / recores / New

    They "talk the talk"

I just read these pages the parts about the Rover V8 and its cooling, its very good.

It basically says keep it running between 75-80C under ALL conditions.

Hitting 100C and you risk damage, read the bit about how the liners are inserted and you can see why.

Looks like I need a better cooling solution.

    Thanks All

**I'll try the cheap option first and replace the thermostat with that of a lower temp
