    TD5 Oil Leak

When I got home from work yesterday I noticed that condensate was dripping only from the left side of the transmission tunnel on my Disco. When I went to investigate it further while I was under the Disco I found what appears to be an oil leak at high level on the rear right side of the engine. Overnight I reckon about 2 teaspoons of oil dripped from the engine.

Last year I spent $6k replacing the head on my Disco due to rising oil levels and the last thing I need is another major repair. I have no real experience playing with motors. Last night I pulled the plastic cover off the engine and could not find any noticeable leak in the head, got a mirror and checked the rear cam plug and again no leaks. The only oily area is around the fuel pressure regulator with droplets of oil hanging off the underside of the plastic hose that is connected to the regulator. With the engine still being hot and the fact that I wasn’t born with surgeons hands I couldn’t check out the pipework further.

I’m 99% sure that when I bought the head new from Rimmer Bros in the UK it came with a new regulator. It has only done 10k since. I know that others have had issues with diesel leaking from the regulator but is it possible that oil can leak from it?

Are you 100% sure it is oil?

A leak from the rear of a TD5 is likely to be the fuel pressure regulator, but you wouldn't expect it to go after 10,000Km. There aren't any oil lines in/out of the fuel regulator at all.

    Spudboy,

Agree with you on the oil lines.

What is leaking is jet black in colour and doesn't smell of diesel. The reason I queried it was due to a conversation with Graeme Coopers's who replaced the head previously for me. To confirm what is causing the leak they want me to bring it in and put it up on the hoist. Apart form the usual reasons they raised the possibility of an oil leak due to the regulator but didn’t go any further.
