    TD5 Mode lights

yesterday the mode lights on the dash started flashing after the wife had been parked for a while listening to the radio she had trouble driving home as it couldnt find the right gear to take off she said that she had to give it a lot of reves to take off when I got home and tryed it the lights stoped flashing and seemed to be ok but now I cant select Manual Mode
any ideas why this happened I will be installing a new battery today but I dont think thats the problem

It's a common complaint. Have a look here for some ideas:

It's a fault in the inhibitor switch located on the LHS of the transmission, basically it tells the trannie what gear it should be in. When it registers a fault it goes into 'limp home mode' which is 3rd gear hence why it seemed really sluggish. If (when) they come on again, switch off, wait about 10 seconds and restart and they should be gone. Unfortunately it will happen more and more often until your wife will threaten to make you sell it and then you'll just have to climb under there and change it.
BTW, when mine played up, the register on the dash didn't show N. does yours?

    TD5 Mode lights

Looks like I had better change the inhibitor switch and cross my fingers that it works
Havent had a look if the N is showing but will when I get home tonight

Had a new battery fitted today the other one was down a bit 12.1 volts normaly I would have thought that would be ok but the alternator would only charge at 13.6 volts

New battery alternator charges at 14.3 volts dont quite understand that but it works

I wouldn't go replacing the inhibitor switch straight away. It might be the problem but the D2s are sensitive to low battery voltage which is what you had. See how it goes first.
You may want to clean a connection or two as well, starting with the inhibitor switch & battery earths.

following on from Scouse.... try re-routing the aircon drain just above the inhibitor switch too, corrosion is not a good thing on them. I thinks you may be prolonging the ineveitable but if you do decide to change the switch anyway, call TRS in SA.... they have them used at a good price. I was quoted anywhere from $400 - $480 PLUS fitting. Mine was $145 incl a 3 month warranty from TRS

I needed such a switch for the C9 going into my RRC and was quoted over $400 from Ford.

    $25 from the wreckers.

    all good, DL
