    Question Sticking Valves

Could the valves be sticking open? Sure I've read TD5s do this... Would the piston tap the valve closed, hence not bending the stem but leaving a mark?

they could, but you would notice it as it would chronically miss as there is no way it would have enough air to get compression and ignition.

The head gasket may well be insufficient for the piston protrusion, but the fact it is only on the centre pistons does indicate that there may well be an issue with the headface.

The thing with diesels is that if you face the head, depending on how much you take off you either need to counter it with a thicker head gasket and look at the valve to piston clearance and if needed, recut valve seats back to spec and then counter the clearance with shims or re adjust tappets in mechanical lifters and valve gear.

    Cheers

How much was taken off the head?

There are only 3 available thicknesses for TD5 head gaskets and from memory the 3 hole one is the thickest.
