Exclamation 2003 NAS DII RHD Conversion

    Hi,
I'm planning to move from Northern California back Adelaide in the next few months. I have built up a 2003 NAS Disco II 4.6L V8 that I desparately wish to move back with me.

My rig has the following mods:
8" hybrid Rovertym/Safari Guard suspension Lift
GBR 110 CV's and HD Axle Shafts
    4:56 Ring/Pinions
    Ashcroft Modified T-case w/ 4.3:1 ratio
    F/R ARB Air Lockers
Rovertym Recambered HD Radius Arms, Watts Linkage, HD Drag Link, Tie Rod, etc...
Fox 12' and 14" reservoir Shocks
Custom F/R Bumpers, Rock Sliders, Roof rack, Roof Tent, etc...
    315 75R 16 Goodyear Wrangler MT's on 16" Steel Rims

Anyway, you get the picture. I have invested a small fortune and a lot of work into my DII and I want to keep it!

I have read that conversion to RHD is a bit of a nightmare and quite costly. Well I've invested upwards of 70k USD so the thought of selling is out of the question. Where do I start, and who can I discuss it with in SA?
Thanks Fellas I know this is a tired issue, but I need some help here.
PS I will post pics and video soon K.
    Cheers,
    Darren

    Hi Darren

There is some bad and good news on this as I see it. Most sates now allow LHD vehicles to be registered but I’m not sure if there are some conditions like in your case where the vehicle IS available in AUS in a RHD version. (As apposed to a GMC Seira for example). And the case is already set on variations of the model – your 4.6 and the 4.0 that was sold here will be viewed as the same vehicle. I suggest you hit the SA transport web site to get started on this one.

At a glance I can see that some of these mods may not be well received when trying to get the car registered even if it was converted to RHD. Example 315/75R16 tyres are far from legal. Unfortunately you will need to go through all the regs.

To save confusion caused by differing opinions go to the authority - Start here - http://www.transport.sa.gov.au/registrations/motor_vehicles/index.asp

Or - You could bring the car over, buy a 4.0 (for bugger all) and transfer all your goodies including the engine to the "new" car - be heaps cheaper and maybe less work... remember there will also be tax to pay on your car when it gets here..

What Harlie said. Transport SA are difficult to deal with at the best of times.

I would be inclined to bring your beast with you, and do a transplant. You will have less issues, and unless you get pulled over by a certain over zealous copper from Holden Hill, you should be fine.

I have a complied RHD D2 chassis (not from a written off vehicle) and all the parts you would need for a RHD conversion. Send me a pm if you are interested.

Thanks you all for taking the time, to help me make the best decision. I would tend to agree, that a transplant may be my only viable option here. (HAHA ****)
I welcome any additional comments or suggestions.

I looked into bring cars into Oz and in your case perhaps you are better off to strip it down to parts leave what you are not going to use in the States and send it in a container over here. The duty is far less and the savings would certainly get another car for you to put everything on with change I suspect. Plus what ever else you would need to bring back. Containers are reasonable price to ship over.

    Gday Darren

Put in simplest terms these are what you would need to get it registered in Australia, and the final bits for SA..

315's will be ok IF the vehicle passes a 'Lane Change & Braking Test' which will require an engineer and around $2000.00

Suspension - No chance in Any state in Australia

RHD - Being less than 15 years old will require a Full RHD Conversion, and includes Headlight lenses and All side marker and tail lights converted to AUS spec.

I'd strongly suggest the "import and swap over to an AU spec body" method...

Your disco sounds nice - How about a pic or 3

    Further to this...

Strip it back to stock - sell the stocker over there and use the funds to ship the stuff and get another one here!

X2 as Tombie has said strip it back, then get a TD5 then when you get here and put all your mods on it one other thing that will fail is the front bumper, if it is a Rovatym front bumper, then it won't be air bag compliant, which doesn't meet ADRs in Australia.
