    Uhf Radio upgrade

Hey guys i have fitted my Radio only to find it is a 27Mhz so not too much use.

So i am in the market for a new unit i have read on another thread it is smarter to buy a cheap unit and spend good money on the aerial for range!

So i am on a tight budget what would be a good cheap unit to pick up i would prefer a detachable face.

I am thinking i might try pick up a second hand unit.

Cheers any pointers would be appriciated

    James.

There's certainly nothing wrong with the cheaper units but don't just consider the cost of the radio and aerial but also factor in how much grief it will take to install. For this reason I'd also recommend looking at the ICOM IC-440, GME TX3420, TX3440 and TX4600 or Uniden UH015sx.

The pick of these (and the most expensive) is the ICOM. But the installation options are more numerous than any of the others. The GME TX4600 is water and dust proof to a degree and is great for a vehicle that you don't really car about the interior. Its case is taken from their marine VHF unit.

OK the radio might cost more but if you can mount it a lot easier in the vehicle and it doesn't get in the road of everything, that's also a big plus.

As for the aerial buy quality, make sure it's ground plane independent and designed for UHF. Look at RFI, Polar, GME

I've had the GME TX3400 (predecessor to TX3420) in my Disco's and currently have a GME TX4600 in my Tdi Defender and an ICOM IC-440 in the Puma.

What vehicle is this going in to? If its a Disco I'd strongly recommend a unit with a remote head or the controls on the mic like the IC-440 or TX3440. Much easier to fit. Head unit under cup holder in front of H/L-CDL and base unit under steering wheel behind kick panel.

It is a disco and one step ahead of you mate! i already planned on getting one with a seperate head and putting the unit inside under the steering wheel i found a nice UNIDEN unit for $300 but i reckon i can get a better deal. My folks are getting it for me for my 19th but i still dont want to rip them off!

After having a look around i have decided i am in the market for a model similar to the one shown in the link below. I am after a unit with a detachable face with basic features. Should i then expect to be paying around $100 more for the antenna?

If so this unit would come to a complete price of around $400...But i recon i can do even better then that again.

I'm not sure I'd even bother with getting an expensive aerial.... How much range do you want? In most cases on a 4wd trip those 15cm aerials are more then enough.

I've had all manner of aerials like I'm sure most on here have but I'm more then happy with the cheaper ones. They get the job done and when I snap one I don't have to shell out heaps for another.
