the p/s box usually are catcus when they leak like you describe, mostly fragments off the gears inside have chewed a few bits out.
as for the swivell seals...$15ea from most LR parts places.
cheers phil
My stearing box has started heamoraging fluid from the bottom shaft/big nut area (big time) and after sitting for a few days there is also neat pool of fluid below the LHS swivel hub. So my question is where is the best place (read: I'm not gonna get fleeced) to get a replacement seal and swivel hub in Brisbane for my 76 Rangie?

Can't help on places in Brisbane. While checking the swivel, make sure where the oil is coming from - is it from the swivel housing seal or the hub seal?
Since you need to remove the swivel housing to replace the its seal, it is worth making sure that it is not loose swivel bearings that are allowing it to leak, as if it is, there is a reasonable chance that just adjusting the preload will fix it.
Unfortunately, while some have had success in replacing the bottom seal on the steering box, it is often a symptom of a worn bush and/or shaft, and replacing the seal is a very temporary fix.

At this stage I think I will be replacing the swivel hub as there appears nothing left in the preload. And, anyway. I'll have a bit of peace of mind.
As for the steering box, it has been problematic ever since I got rangie so, whre to from here? how do I find a box that isn't stuffed?
Who does the exchange boxes?
Jag and Rover Spares can do the swivel at least. Maybe the box too. Good bloke, and always good pricing.

If you have no swivel pre-load left that would be the reason for the leak.PS box's aren't worth fixing, get an exchange one. Pat
