In the RRC 1984 that I am trying to sell, I put a new bottom seal in it, which slowed down the leak very much. Did not fix it entirely but it leaks fairly slow now days.

    Hi Djames,

I just swapped PS box in my 76 Rangie, 3 bolt out, 4 bolt in yesterday They bolt straight in, but the 4 mounting bolts though chassis rail are different, make sure you get them supplied if you go to a 4 bolt box. If I recall the oldies are 7/16 unc, and will screw in the new box, but wobble so too lose to use. New ones are metric, might be 11 mil?? also you'll need to clean out holes with a 12 mill drill bit, one to get the new bolts though, but also to give yourself some clearence to get all four bolts started...then there are the hoses. the two fittings into the top if box are different. I bought for $10 of ebay some 4 bolt hoses. Asked the seller to circumsize the fittings off and send to me only. Then had Pirtek at great expense fit new hoses. Pump fitting stays the same, and again differs from later pumps... A heap of new oil, bleed ar from top of box and she's a little ripper. Much nicer box to steer with and same as LSE... oh and no oil leaks..! 4 bolt boxes can be got from any series 1 disco, maybe even series 2??

    regards,
    Russell..

Just had a good look at the LHS swivel hob and appears its actually the hub seal that it leaking, not the seal around sthe swivel bit. I have also found that some of the bolts are also loose. But, I also found that the bolts at the flange at the wheel end on the axle housing (I hope that makes sense) were also loose - explaines the leak there too - and a 3mm gap at the bottom. As for the steering box, I'll call around this week. Another job for the weekend coming up ...
