The oil cooler I used was similar to that one on ebay.
i can see the pics that Rick posted.
I've got a brand new RR clasic oil cooler which I'm going to have a go at fitting.
While it may not have the same cooling capacity as the radiator style ones I keen to minimise the loss of flow throught the radiator air con cooler.
The RR type can be mounted low down and looks like it will require minimum modifications to the fiberglass nosecone.
Hi fella's, I gave a bit of a bum steer on the t/stat opening temp, it's actually 74* on the one I have.
This means that at 75* a 'normal' ATF would have a viscosity in the region of 12-13cSt, old, plain Syntrans would be 21cSt, the new 'Syntrans Max' for ZF truck 'boxes 16.6cSt, and Caltex/Texaco MTF94 18.3cSt.
plenty of cooling with just the pipe, and even then I think its over rated if you drive it nice.
its easy enough to put in an auto cooler if you want one or even better a small ally radiator from a motorbike (which you can also get complete with cute little thermofan systems) theres bugger all oil pressure from the pump which is a good thing and theres nothing stopping you mounting the cooler anywhere you like. BUT... KISS you hole the oil cooling system or spring a leak and it wont take long to empty the box. now ask yourself, hot oil or no oil?
DEX III is good to about 150ish deg c and engine oil goes further than that. Landrover in their infinant wisdom even included a method of roughly checking the temp of your transmission. (2 in some varients) 1, the bottom of the hand brake assembly, and 2 the transfer case lever if you cant comfortabley hold them its getting a bit hot down there and if you cant touch it period maybe its time to gear back and slow down (4th gear provides the least heat load on the main gearbox)

Its good enough for a lot of plant equipment and heavy vehicle to not start to derate the engine power or the hydrostatic retarder till that temp and higher (160 for the busmaster)
the trans in the M113 had the overheat warning light come on at 140 and it was originally speced for dex II.
for poos and giggles IVe been running big red on the same batch of Dex III now for 50K Km chipped and its had a decent variety thrown at it since then. and Ive got no unusual noises or difficult shifting yet.. the next 50K Km will be on engine oil.
