    centre diff lock wont engage

    hey everyone
Ive got a 85 defender 90 with a 3.9 v8, r380 box and what should be a lt230 transfer box, problem i got is the centre diff lock wont engage even the ligtht doesn't come on i was told by a land rover workshop in boronia that it could be the switch is stuck and cause the lever to engage but the internal part not the slide back
any thoughts on this i haven't tried to take the switch out yet but thats the plan.

there are quite a few threads about it. Job takes a couple of hours to do but is not that hard. The hardest part on the D1 is reattaching the hand brake cable because you have to remove the centre console.

I had a similiar problem with mine. You can read about the fix here

    there is also this

Is this one of the vacuum operated ones ?? (I don't know when they changed to mechanical)

If so try giving into the switch a good spray with WD40 and then try it. Used to work with the old RR.

Thanks trobbo and bushie thanks for the info
    Its a mech linkage.
i decided yesterday afternoon to bite the bullet and take the front housing off this is no easy task with only a few tools.
Since my def is a v8 i had the headers to contend with so getting out the housing was not easy there also was a mount i had to remove that took a while.
once out i took off the side plate to discover one of the two c shaped spring retainers has been flaired out giving the selector fork no tension in the engage position im assuming that this was caused by over shifting as the hi/low/diff lock gear stick will allow this i couldnt find any stops to adjust i think if i just take it easy with it it will be fine.
the switch was fine and is now working as it should.
it was alot of work but im proud i did it all myself saved myself a lot of money that i can spend on some muddies
