    Harmonic propshaft noise

    Hello Folks,

I started to hear a new noise in my 07 defender over the last 1000 odd kms - best described as a "Grooing" sound. It only happens below 60km/h.

MR automotive have diagnosed this as a harmonic propshaft vibration occurring at speeds under 60km/h. I had to take it to MR to find out what was wrong as Southside LR said there was no unusual noise in the vehicle when I took it to them - but you know, when it's your vehicle and you drive it all the time, you easily pick something wrong or different.

I'm taking it back to the dealer (Austral) later this month now that MR have confirmed an issue, but was wondering how such a noise can suddenly happen - it began in the last thousand km's.

I've had a good look at the prop shafts and they don't appear to have been damaged in any way - and I can't see anything missing etc, nor could MR.

Makes me wonder how such things just develop? And what can be done to eliminate harmonic noises/vibrations - balancing? replacement?

Your description is familiar to my symptoms

    Can be a combination of

Lack of grease in Uni's ... Excessive free play from the bearing of the front output shaft of the T/C box .. Twisted propshaft

Basically ... Take the propshaft off ... see if there is a difference

Try / borrow a known good one ..... see if there is a difference

Are you saying that you have a noise ... but no vibration??

By the way ... Welcome to my world

Hello mike - yes, I have a noise but no vibration. Vehicle is under warranty so the dealer can just fix it (I hope) .

It is just annoying more than anything.

The shaft has been fully checked and lubed - and as it is under warranty, I don't want to mess with it should I void the warranty.

Put the car on axle stands ... all 4 wheels off the ground ... Then drive it static at that sub 60 kph and hear if the sound appears ... If it does, then you will be able to

A ... hear all the noises of the drive train
B ... see & hear the offending part ... and know it's not your imagination
C ... Teach the dealer on how to find & identify faults properly

Jerks me off when a mechanic pronounces "can't hear a thing mate" ... So hopefully this will "Checkmate" them

    Hope it helps

PS ... I have the vibration at sub 60 ... but no noise ... and mine is RRC

Yep - if he sees this and volunteers I'll go see him.

Thanks for your advice though - I can see myself up on the ramps - then, when somehow I fall off the ramps, I fly through the fence cartoon style into the neighbour's yard with the Defender shape cutout into the fence.
