    chasing down an electrical short

My series 1 ES disco has developed an electrical short in the past few days sufficient to pull the battery right down to 6 volts over 12 hours. I have had the battery tested and that is in top condition.
This happened just after I changed the front rotors to slotted.
    (they are )

So I am thinking that maybe it have hit something electrical down there while i was at it. Only thing is I dont recall seeing any wires as part of the project and the brake pads dont have the sensors fitted as the whole front diff housing assembly is out of a pre abs car. Any suggestions?

    Do you have a multimeter?

Pull the fuses and measure how much current is pulled via each fuse. That should give you an idea of where the culprit is. Ensure current setting on meter exceeds the fuse value before you stick your meter onto the fuse holders.

    nope.

I used my 12 volt wheel nuts impact wrench for wheels, stub axle and rotor bolts (gee it made it easy ) and connected that straight to the battery. I have had a bit of a look around the terminals but cant see anything obvious. With the ohmmeter I have an open circuit between the two battery terminals without a battery in the car.

Thanks guys, the battery is about 3 months old, has been tested and shown to be good.

Slug Burner good advice than you I hadn't really thought about chasing it like that. Will do next time....

I'm going away over easter and sadly dont have time to chase it and then possibly not find it, so it's booked in and I'm paying the man.

Took the car down the auto elec this morning. When I got there I popped the bonnet to disconnect the battery and the agm battery is bubbling away and has spewed whatever everywhere. Hmmm.

Got the call from the elec a little while ago yep the alternator has crapped itself. Now this thing was fitted 7 months ago and was brand new. I have done perhaps 2000 km in that time and perhaps once off road. Now to find out if there is any warranty. I have phoned the supplier and he doesn't have any in stock and will have to make some calls about warranty. Guess this will impede my departure.
