    RRC or what???

I have been offered an 88 Range Rover with woodgrain dash, doors, and armrests. It has a 4.6 injected motor and the 4 speed ZF auto. Any ideas as to which model etc this is to save me a trip to check it out if it is not genuine. Thanks all. Bob H

An '88 would have had a 3.5 from standard, it must have been repowered.

ZF 4 speed is the standard auto trans for an '88.

If it's got that P38 4.6 then maybe it's also got the upgraded ZF which came with that motor. Seems logical to swap the engine with its factory transmision at the same time to me.

Thanks for that, hopefully that is the case. Does the woodgrain mean that it is a top of the renge model or did this year/model come standard with woodgrain? My old 84 model only had cloth trimand plastic dash. Any way to tell if it is the P38 motor andg/box? Bob

I think [and may be corrected here] that wood grain was standard. The models back then were I think Hi Line and Vogue. Vogue being more upmarket. Someone here will answer you more accurately shortly. If it's a 4.6 as you said then it is a P38 engine.

The trim. Hi Line had velour from memory but again am not sure. Not much help I know but Easter may see many knowledgeable regulars away for a few days.Cheers.

I had a 88 Hiline, came with leather and sunroof.

Also put in a 4.6 but not ex-P38.

Check with owner, also check if high or low comp motors.
Its stamped on RHS of motor just under the manifold.

Check what heads are on it, often they use standard 3.9 heads, they work fine.
I had both a low and high compression motor and the high 9.3-1 was a stonker.
It seriously went way better. Needed high octane or gas.

The ZF is a great box and will take punishment if serviced well.
They are a great year because of very little electrics and ability to easily modify.

    Great choice, go for it.

Pay no more than 6-8k. Leave some money for service, lift kit and getting it the way you want it, mine never broke down once.

    Just buy it

4.6 could either be P38 derived or more than likely a stroker kit fitted

It won't have the bigger HP24 auto as this unit is elecrtonically controlled, you "could" be very lucky and the transmission is uprated but, I betting not

Hiline and vogue are much the same, just earlier and later

HiLine was the upper spec level till 1988. After that they went to the 3.9V8, the Viscous T/Case and started using the word Vogue for the upper trim level. I've got a manual '88 HiLine with 450,000km on it as my wifes daily driver.
