Have I done my A frame pivot?

O.K. Gurus, so you think you're a coiler expert.

    Try this quick quiz?

The images below were taken at 22:30 hrs tonight, just after I heard a grunching noise and the rear end immediately became unstable.

    What have I done?

Why is it always Good Friday or immediately before? (Last year it was alternator failure.)

    Guess I'm not going away!

You won't find me on: faceplant; Scipe; Infragam; LumpedIn; ShapCnat or Twitting. I'm just not that interesting.

Looks suss, but won;t necassarily cause instabilty, but if all else looks well, its the likely culprit, a BIG lever and some wiggleing will soon tell, or try to rock the back of you RR side to side, and stick a noggin under and check where its clunking

I'd hit it with a big hammer and weld it.

The noise happened on braking and turning left and the rear end felt like it was wandering immediately.

Luckily I was at the end of my street coming home from work. When I went to back in to the drive another clunk and I didn't feel I could rely on the rear end going where I wanted it to.

While I play with my other vehicles, I rarely work on this one as it is a daily driver and it gets serviced almost exclusively in the one place (LPG excepted). The last one about 5K ago.

What do people think about the bits of metal indicated by the arrows. Should the one at the red arrow be attached to the bracket at the blue one?

Simon, may well be correct about the welding!

    Test 2:

Lie on grass under car, put hand on side of body and push - not hard, watch body move horizontally from side to side independent of axle assembly as bottom of pivot waves around in space.

    OH, ****, I missed that

DON'T drive it, its torn the ball joint mount from the housing, more common than you think, it would of been brewing for some time

It need, rewelding and gusseting, before it moves at speed again!

Crappy Land Rovers, I've only had this car for about 24 years and the axle assembly comes apart. How long is the warranty on the drive train again?

OK next question - I have a couple of spare RRc (160 Km away). One is the same 1985 model Phase II HiLine as Vague, but I wanted to keep it to restore as original spec.

I also have another bitza RRc, that has an 1982 - 85 4 door body shell on what seems to be 2 door prefix chassis. This bitza has the early hubs that don't fit OEM alloy rims.

Is the axle casing on the bitza the same as on Vague?

Earlier RRCs had 'opposing shocks on the back - one in front of the housing (R/H I think) as per later cars, but the other was behind. If your bitza still has an early housing you'll either have to drill the chassis & move the top shock mount on your car, or weld on a suitable bracket to the diff to accept the other front shock position.
Or weld & reinforce your original housing.

I have had this happen twice.
The earlier Rangie's bracket was not as strong as the later ones.

I strongly suggest that you take the axle out and have it professionally welded and add gussets to strengthen it. Its only three bolts( two in your case LOL) and the brake line to drop the axle out.

I broke one snatching someone up a rock step, had it welded in situ, then it broke again on Cooloola. Drove back to a friend's place in Buderim with some nylon straps holding the axle, and then we pulled out the axle and did it properly.

It's a shame your diff didn't leak more or it might have got thrown up & saved this happening.

LR oil leaks do have their uses you know.
