    Help help! Td5 starter motor

Excuse my lack of writing ability im attempting this on my mobile! Td5 starter not engaging properly. Horrible noise. So far cleaned commutator, freed brushes, new contacts, new plunger, new low amp wire from fuse box to solenoid/pluger. Stripped gears and cleaned/regreased with moly grease. Bendix appeared ok, cleaned, greased too. Ring gear has "signs of use" but not chips/rounded teeth. Pinion "looks ok" but not 100% sure what it SHOULD look like - cleaned any obvious burs with dremel. Motor went a bit better when replaced but now up to old tricks. Sometimes fine, next time grr grr. Happened fairly quickly, ova about a few days. Any common "Td5" faults?? Soleoid probs? (motor "bench tests" great. Very positive action. I am thinkin pinion but it doesn't look obviously bad. Bendix-although it looks and feels fine? Goin CRAZY here! !

I'd suggest getting your battery checked. Cheap way to eliminate one possible cause.

    cheers, DL

Question How would u check it?

Not sure how to check it - what were the symptoms? It feels alright "by hand" but not sure what it should feel like! Might be a possibility... Thanks mate!

In the end after rebuilding it twice and chewing up some bits of wood I cracked the sads, took it to work, fitted it to the test bench and fitted a locking strap to the test wheel.

the motor spun even with full engagement but made a horrid noise as the sprag clutch finally totally destroyed itself... pulled a heap of amps.

    Thumbs up Cheers guys.

ATM it's not making the noise anymore. I cleaned the battery terminals and sprayed some teflon inox on the rotating ring gear through the drain port, "washing" it; maybe there was some grit on the ring gear from my wading exercises lifting oily muck from the weeping rear main...
If it returns I'll suspect that clutch - Are the available to buy?
    Cheers,

So what were the actual symptoms? Did it slip and only partly engage making a horrid grinding sound? Was the fault constant or only sometimes evident?

it started out as intermittant free spinning, like the throw out wasnt throwing far enough or the teeth on the ring gear were missing.

(pulling it out and inspecting the ring gear proved this to not be the case)

it then proceded onto sometimes not engage and at others it would engage and jog the engine over randomly, If you managed to catch it just right it would engage and turn the engine over untill it started. While it was jogging or turning the motor over slowly you could hear a nasty metal on metal grind.

then it just stopped being able to turn the engine over at all. Bypassing the throw out drew less amps on the clamp meter than trying it via the key.

Thinking on it you might also have a dropped bush or bearing.
