    Stage 1 LT95 to ZF auto/LT230

    So, todays question!!

    Currently we have the stage 1 with all the panel work removed, and it obviously has the LT95 gearbox.

    I also have hidden away a low k, but rusty 1988 RRC with a ZF auto and LT230.

    So, would there be any issues with swapping the boxes over. I have the complete running RRC so will test it a bit more prior to deciding but it should be relativley simple shouldn't it?

    It will swap straight over in terms of bolting to the engine wont it?

    Admitedly tailshafts may have to be modified, but other than that?

    not quite that easy...

    change the flywheel to suit the TC
    change the mounts for the box
    handbrake links
    shifter (not a big deal if you have the cable version of the box)
    route cooler lines.

    as I said, not that easy but a long way from being difficult.

    does that mean you might have a spare lt95... if so I might be able to free up some mechanicing hours.....

    As Dave says it is an easy job but time consuming, as there are quite a few things to consider like an Oil cooler for trans etc but you will find that the chassis bracketry for the LT95 is almost identical to the RRC / ZF in all the important respects, like holes for the gearbox mounts etc. The auto trans and T/C will end up in a similar position so major shaft mods will be kept to a minimum. I went the other way, ZF/LT230 to LT95 and it was no hassle.

    Shifter cable routing will be a joy, as the box will be close to the floor so in order to get a good cable arc it'll need to be on a plinth of some sort I reckon, judging by the Auto conversions I have done to Tdi Defenders in the past.

    You really should think about a Defender High range gearset in the TC as the 1.2:1 will be too high geared on 7.50/16. (Or 4.11's on 35's )

    It'll be a great rig with an auto, good idea Pete!

    Thanks Guys,

    The only thing that a very quick tape measure (ing) maybe brought up was that the crossmember behind the gearbox on the stage 1 is about exactly where the LT230 Handbrake drum will sit.

    (If someone had an accurate measurement of a zf/lt230 set up from the bell housing face, to back of handbrake drum that would be great!!)

    I need to get a more accurate measure before I am certain about that though.

    I will definetley remove the zf when I get time, and may well do the swap.

    Decisions Decisions.... as you all rave about the LT95 I am a bit wary of taking it out, although the one I have driven wasnt exactly the easiest gearbox in the world!! expecially after a late model r380!!

    And just to add, I have a defender with the annoyingly low, high range ratio, so maybe a swap of those gears!

    no, the lt95 is no good, its an overgrown paper weight, trust me I work on them all the time, the slightest amount of running with no oil in them destroys them as does putting the wrong oil in.


    at least if you put the auto in when it runs out of oil it stops and will lock in first gear if the oil is too thick, letting you know you've done something wrong.

    best take the 95 out and give it to me to dispose of for you in a safe manner before it does something to hurt your stage 1.

    pete dont listen to em either fit larger tyres or get the higher raito final drive set from a rangie that will make it better on fuel and quicker on road as for the gear change being a tad truck like get use to it give the box a oil change with some 30 grade engin oil and fill up the transfer with some 90 grade sell the ZF/230 combo to fund other usefull mods like the larger tyres or the .996 to 1 gearset for the final drive
