Good luck DiscoKnight...
I'd be too embarrassed to post a thread like this (on several counts)
Hi all, holidaying in harrington and just had the Disco Series II on the beach. Unfortunately I ended up bogged and it was operator error.
Anyway I was trying to get out with some assistance and the blokes helping me reckon the car was not in low range. Now I have never taken any notice but does a light come on the dash if low rang is engaged?
I don't think it does. After I got out I went and found a steep hill and used hill descent to get me down so that told me that low range was working?
Help please?
Obvioulsy from some of the replies I have received I have not been clear on my question.
Firstly, I know how to engage it in low and this was done. My question is simply is there an indicator light to show it is engaged in low? The vehicle does not have CDL. I know, because I havje read the "operating manual in the past that for hill descent to work then low range must be engaged. I tried this and Hill descent worked so I am assuing that there is no indicator light to show L is engaged and that the bloke that helped me was incorrect in his belief that the vehicle was not engaged.
Good luck DiscoKnight...

................................................^^^^^^.................^^^^^^^^.................^^^^
Left to right .............................. Hand brake ............. T bar for Auto ........ Lever with knob = High / Low range select
Stop car / Put Auto in neutral / push lever forward = Low range
Your car came with a "Owners Manual" .. A nice leather wallet with a thick book in it, plus all the service details & history ... Crack a beer and give it a good read

I drive a S1 Disco so i may not give the most reliable information for a D2 but depending on what model you have (i.e. Year) you may not have the CDL (Centre Diff Lock) installed/available in standard trim. The CDL light is probably what the person was expecting to see. I am not sure if there is a light in the D2 that indicates low range without the CDL (i know in my D1 low has no light, only Low CDL does). Easiest way to check it is going into Low would be First Gear high and check speed at a set RPM, then try Low Range and check speed at same RPM.
Hopefully that is somewhat helpful.
Oh yeah, i think there is also a TC (Traction Control) light in the D2 dash but this will only flicker on/off as the TC is working, so not always on.
Cheers Baz.

This is what I am thinking. it does not have a CDL... (2001 model) it just goes from H to L.... I had no problems putting into L but the bloke reckoned that it wasnt engaged however, I am sure it was because once I got out of the soft sand I had not trouble getting off the beach and had travelled some 20ks on the beach before turning into the soft sand.
I also not that the manual does not provide any useful information about whether there is a light or not...but I seem to think there isnt.
Thanks for those who supplied replies to this post.
Thanks Mike, perhaps I did not explain myself properly in the first post and that is what has led your your informative post. I know how to engage it...I just don't recall whether there was a light to indicate it was in Low....that is the question I was asking. Just for your information the owners manual does not mention that there is a light I just wanted to be clear on what I thought.
Once again thanks for you input.
Sorry ... Just the way I read the Q...
If you pushed the gear into L ... and it worked ... Then all is OK
It is a manual transfer lever ... You can feel it slip out of High to neutral, and then, the resistance of slipping it into the Low range ....
Regardless of "Light or no light" / If it did not engage then you would have heard the sound of revs of the motor, as the T/C would most probably be in neutral
