    Intermittant stoppage?????

Hi to all, this morningmy 92disco 1 refused to start. After a few squirts with Start u Ba..ted, it finally decided to start. All well while driving but then refused to start again after 15mins or so. A few more squirts and away she goes. Then while driving she just cut out and then fired up again[ with the ign still on]. Then she cut out and wouldnt start again until I turned the ign off first. Fired up first go. Then cut out a few more times while driving but restarted again without touching the ign.[ just like turning the ign off and then back on after a few metres] Changed the coil[ with a 2nd hand one of unknown quality] and hey presto, fired and ran good for a few Ks and then started to cut out again. Disconnected all the relays I could find [ 1 seemed reasonably hot] but the bit.. just kept running[ to spite me I think]. Any clues as to what could be wrong and where to start looking as I need the veh going on Tuesday. Thanks everyone, Bob H

when we had a smiliar problem on our 98 V8 disco it was a combination of the MAF meter and the car running extremely rich From memory I think they said it was running at 8% if that means anything to you! as it certainly ment nothing to me

never had a problem starting in the morning though but would cut out when being driven especailly if the car dropped down to idling in traffic
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

for a 92 v8 ide be looking at replacing the fuel pump and the fuel pump relay. best case would be to check the earth continuity at the fuel pump.

    cheers phil

.... cause you keep adding fuel to get it going ....

...You can get the fuel pressure tested ... to confirm either the "fuel pump" or the "Fuel pressure regulator" valve at the rear of the fuel rail

Hi Phil, where and which relay is the pump relay? Disconected all the relays on the drivers side kick panel and nothing happened, except the motor kept running nicely. It seems to me to be more of an electrial fault really, as in an intermittant and sometimes momentry short that does not affect spark to the plugs. Maybe the ign switch failing in some way and cutting power to the fuel cut solenoid[if petrol engines have one] as when it wouldnt start this morning I still had spark at the plugs. Since replacing the coil it seems to have more power [seat of the pants] but the problem is still there while driving. Bob

Where is the MAF meter? Is it on the air intake, the alloy housing with wires connecting to it? How does one make adjustments to it? Bob

i'm not sure you can I think its a case of if its playing up it means its on its way out and you need a new one.

I would be looking at phils method first as MAF's aren't cheap so you dont want to be changing it for the sake of it

when you sit in the drivers seat there are 2 relays at your left foot, one of them it the fuel pump relay, turn the ignition on but dont start the engine and pull the relays one at a time till you hear the fuel pump stop. or you could just replace both, there quite cheap and available anywhere.

the reason i say its the fuel pump is my first D1 did the same thing, it ended up being the crap in the tank had worn the copper down on the armature so thin that when it stopped in one of 2 spots it wouldnt start(untill you bashed the top of the tank) i replace the pump with a VN commadore one. never happened after that till the earth from the pump needed changing (replaced the crimp and wire brushed the male on the tank.)

    cheers phil
