Have had my D2 td5 for about a year now, and have always been a bit suspect of the fuel filter being holed by flying rocks. Was wondering if anyone has heard of this happening and if so some guard ideas, i have a few ideas floating around in that void of mine.

my 90 had a cover for the fuel filter as standard, i took it off as it rattled its tits off!

Why not just keep a spare fuel filter in the car?
Does double duty, just in case you get a bad tank of diesel.

I asked the same question a few months back... the consensus seemed to be.. carry a spare filter.. and an 8mm bolt in case the sensor gets knocked off..
But apparently it's very rare for them to get hit !

I broke my fuel filter drain plug about 6 months ago, possibly from over tightening by the mechanic. I've since replaced the original drain plug with a 10mm x 16 stainless bolt using the rubber seal from the original drain plug. I drilled the bolt with an exit hole just above the washer.
I'll never trust the plastic drain plug again.
The most recent TD5's discarded the water sensor.
Please note the TD5 fuel filter drain hole is 10mm not 8mm

Mine broke as well recently,there wont be too much rust on the right hand rear of the car for a while...,but it does smell of diesel.I replaced it with a filter i had that i keep for trips.I also keep a 10mm 3/4 inch bolt & that rubber washer in the glovebox.
In fact you can get the filter from supercheap,it has nothing in the thread on the bottom...
They also keep airfilters & oil filters for the TD5 now as well...
Will cary a spare filter/s and 10mm bolt, but how much fuel is lost in the process, as am planning trips into outback WA,(gunbarell hwy etc.).Fuel usage becomes very important. Have std 95l and 51l LRA sill tank.
you should be able to adapt the shield assemby from the deefer easily enough.
sectioning a piece of 100mm gutter pipe and folding the edges out then drilling them to take square frameing brackets would nicely attach it to the chassis over the filter.

I lost about 20 l in less than 2 Km with a partial fracture of the drain plug.
I would recommend you put the bolt in now.
I was just lucky that we were only a few Km from our destination when I pulled up and found the trail of diesel, or else we would have been walking. I screwed a piece of wood into the bolt hole and made the 80 Km trip home with only a slow drip.
