    Noisy Tappets

    Hi All,

    I have 81 RR 3.5 ltre V8 2 Door

About 2 weeks ago the missus was using my baby, her D1 (was in for service) got home after dropping daughter at uni switched off engine all fine ... 2 hours later hopped in turned the ignition and wouldn't start. Had RAC out couldn't find problem, turning over fast, fuel, spark, but no go. They couldn't work it out
On popping the distributor cap noticed rotor button would turn then stop then turn and stop.
Final diagnosis had stripped the teeth off cam shaft.
Lucky, it happened in driveway not while driving

Fine, pulled off timing cover replaced chain, cam gear etc, reset timing TDC
and started her up..... all fine except now has really noisy tappets, sound if she has solid lifters. Motor has always been quiet.
I only drive her once or twice a week and on weekends but never before has she sounded like this.
She's been sitting around (not the missus) for approx 3 weeks before we could pull out cam gear, so people I've talked to say oil drained from hydraulic lifters and some have not re pressurized up.
Will they repressure up or will I have to now change all the lifters as
she does sound noisy and I don't want to damage anything else.

Also I've heard that people have used holden lifters in thier 3.5 motors?
Does anyone know which Holden motor they are referring to?

    Any advise appreciated,

    Baggy

    Couple of Q's

Are you sure you have oil pressure?
Did you change the oil & filter ... What brand /grade did you use?
    You installed a new cam?

They have been known to bend pushrods when cam becomes out of time. i'd be pulling the rocker covers off and see if any are bent.

    Noisy Tappets

    Hi Mike,

Yes, changed oil and filter, have oil pressure.
First seemed low to what I remembered when idling (sits near 1 on gauge)
and because she idles low at moment red oil light flickers slightly, but under normal driving registers between 1-2 on original gauge which was what she normally sat on.
Pulled off tappet cover R H Side (its the easiest) and oil is running down most of tappets. Using 20W 50W Oil as per normal.

    JC,

I'll give that a go, will pull off Tappet covers on the weekend.
I have some push rods from an old 3.5 V8 in the shed, maybe just swap some of them over and see if it does the trick.

    Appreciate advice

    Cheers

I would take Justinc advise into mind

Old lifters can loose there oil (bleed down) they usually pressure up after a good drive ... You could try a thicker oil blend // 25/60 ... Oil for old motor blend ... helps put more pressure back into system from the "oil pump"
