Correct electrical wiring or wive tail

I don’t know if this is one of those old wives tails but would appreciate your advice/comments.

I’ve been told that by earthing to the body/chassis you promote corrosion. The ideal way is to earth directly back to the battery wherever possible.

I’ve also been told that the earth wire should be rated the same as the positive feed as it has to return the same current.

The reason I’m asking is that I have to get under the 110 to run some wires. I’m thinking of taking the negative strap off the chasse rail on the drivers side from the bulkhead which I believe is the main earthing point for the dash/instruments- internals and taking it back to the battery. Similarly the “chasse clip” on the negative line near the battery box I’d remove.

Then generally as a matter of course as I find wires earthing to panels etc I’d take them back to a main earthing wire.

If true probably overkill but what the heck. If it's better and I’m doing the work it takes no longer.

Chassis currents will not induce corrosion, but corrosion in joints between body/chassis parts will give problems with the earth return. Running an earth return wire is overkill, although in the case of a Landrover with bad interpanel corrosion it may be the simplest way to get everything working properly. As stated the wire gauge has to be the same as would be needed for the positive wire.

Historically, two wire systems (often not even earthed to the chassis) have been used on many vehicles, particularly where the body was largely wooden, and were mandated for buses and hazardous cargo vehicles in some countries.

To minimise the risk of earth problems connect directly to the chassis or an established earth point. The earth return (device to chassis / chassis to battery) should be at least as big as the Positive wire. The current is limited by the smallest or poorest connection.
