    Diff Pinnion Seal

    Hi All

I have a 1997 Landrover Defender 130 with a leaking rear salsbury diff pinnion seal. Could anybody please tell me if I would be able to undo the pinnion nut with an air impact gun without doing damage to the diff.

    Thanks all

It should come off with a socket & breaker bar, but obviously she's a tad tight!
Yes, you can use an impact gun to remove it, just not to torque it back on!

You might have already done it, but a leaking pinion seal is usually a tell tale sighn that the the pinion bearing is flogged might be worth checking out.

A couple of years ago when I replaced my salisbury pinion seal, I cut a couple of gaskets to go behind the seal.

That moved the seal forward so that it seated on a new part of the flange.

So far so good. As it has lasted a couple of years, is there any reason not to expect it to continue to do the job?

I do seem to remember when i tried to undo the nut, I needed to borrow a 3/4 drive socket and a much bigger bar. The 1/2 drive socket and normal sized bar I had just wasn't up to the job.

Or maybe it was just me that wasn't up to the job.

That is what water pipe is made for. (maybe that is why I had to buy a new 1/2" drive breaker bar)

in the workshop......we used to use a rattle gun........both off and on......

unless it was really tight........then it was a case of 3/4 drive socket with a length of pipe......

if there are grooves in the flange.......either fit a sleeve on it......or dont push the seal all the way in.......
leave it out a mm or two so it runs on a flat section of the flange instead of in the grooves......

its usually mud and dust that gets in and imbeds itself on the soft seal.....and slowly grinds away at the flange........
    till it starts to leak......

The new type pinion flange has a big mud shield to protect the seal. Well worth replacing it with a new one while you are changing the seal.

Oups, thats probably the noise coming from my rear diff.

The seal was leaking - replaced, all good but a few thousand km's later now there is that noise coming from the rear diff.

What is involved in changing the pinion bearing - what is the easiest way to check if flogged?
