Alternator bearing?, Idle pulley bearing, compressor bearing? these all can go
Hi All,
I have an odd noise in the front of my TDi 300.
I recently had the radiator replaced and in the process put in all new hoses, bearings, and a coolant header bottle.
The noise sounds like a bearing in failure mode. Its not consistent (it comes n goes), at idle it disappears after a few minutes. I've listened all around the engine and I'm stuffed it I can find it. I don't have time to fiddle with it so its off to the resident Landy expert to look at.
My main suspicions are
Possibly the fan hub bearing but it was fine 4 weeks ago when it was last in pieces.
Camshaft Drive Belt idler or tensioner. Shouldn't be as it was replaced @ 40,000k and it now has 67,000
Injector Pump, God I hope not.
Let me know your thoughts please.
Cheers

Wouldn't be more of a ....
Chirp / chirp / chirp / noise ... or a ... "constant squealing" that fades out .... noise???
Could be just grease on the (pulley) parts from the last service that you mention ....
Try dusting the Serpentine belt with "Talcum powder" prior to starting the car

Alternator Bearing, I hope not, 100 Amp n new 4 months ago
Idler bearing, hope not all replaced about a month ago
Not the Aircon Clutch, Checked n chimmed about 6 weeks ago.
Had another listen tonight n I think its coming from the Injector Pump![]()
Well Boys n Girls,
It did indeed turn out to be the counterweight springs in the injector pumpImagine that after only 67,000k. $600 for a reco pump n christ knows how much to fit it.
Not happy Jan, Whats gonna break on the damn thing next?![]()
Well,
For those who are interested.
When the vehicle was purchased it had an alleged 37,900k on the clock despite being 8 years old.
When I got back to Tassie I took it down to Justin and he fitted the factory timing belt kit.
Because of the the odd noise that has been coming from behind the timing cover I assumed (correctly) that there was something wrong with the injection pump.
On closer inspection there was a considerable bit of belt dust from what I'd describe as premature belt degradation. The idle roller had a grumbling bearing as did the tensioner which was even worse.
Whilst it (the belt, tensioner and roller) were no where near failure its a bit of a worry that they had only done 30,000k
If anyone has had a similar experience please let me know.
Regards,
Adrian
