    think the turbo is going?

Hi i have posted some of this on another thread but anyway. The turbo on my 300tdi defender makes a high pitched whistle (much like the big truck turbos) when it kicks in at about 2000 rpm. I have changed the two pipes to the intercooler and no good. What i have noticed is that when one of the intercooler pipes from the turbo came off it was rather oily and when it was run with the pipe off (blew off due to crappy hose clamp) it sprayed oil out of the turbo. To me this sounds as if one of the seals in my turbo is dying. Does this require a new turbo or is there something i'm likely to be missing.
    THanks

Post Only speaking from td5 experience...

A certain amount of whistle is fine on any turbo. A little oil can be feeding in from the PCV valve (crankcase breather) on td5's and getting sucked through the system (this is normal) as a mist in the fumes. If there's a valve in the hose leading to the turbo have a look and see if there is oil BEFORE the turbo. A small amount from this is normal, and of course may build up and pool over time.

Search "provent" here for an interesting solution.

If you are losing oil noticably, there is a problem.

A lot of oil from the crankcase breather could point to a broken ring or holed piston!

BE CAREFUL if it is a lot of oil in the intake!! It could run through the system and possibly cause the engine to run on uncontrollably!!
Once the source is found you may also want to clean out the intercooler - run a search here on that too.
Like I said, just speaking from TD5 experience!

    Good luck!

Doesn't sound promising - as long as you are sure it's from the turbo not a bung bearing on the serpentine/fan belt...

Think it probably is as the whistle only starts up when the turbo really kicks in
    Thanks

Check your manifold studs. I have just gone through a long, lengthy and possibly expensive exercise with symptoms just like yours.
I thought it was a turbo going so I fitted a new one, and guess what, the whistle was still there.
Replaced a few manifold studs and gaskets and all was well.
As an aside, in my indecision, I decided to keep the new turbo on as the old one was sure to have suffered some wear after 190,000 ks, so, paid the extra and rested assured that a new turbo must be a good thing.
5 months later and less than 10000kms and the new turbo blows up stranding me in the middle of nowhere.
The long and short of the story is that Garrett now says it was oversped (on a TD5!!) and are reneging on warranty. At least I still have the old one to fall back on.
As I said, check manifolds and then tread carefully.
    Regards
    Glen

Have you pulled the turbo off and had a look at it? How are the blades etc on the impellor? Are they worn? Is there play in the shaft?

Also, i just put a new motor in my disco and after hooking everything up i missed the braded hose (about 25mm in diameter) that runs around the back of the motor from the drivers side of the engine and hooks up under the one of the larger hoses. With that hose of the turbo whistle was quite loud, when i noticed that hose was missing and hooked it back up the whistle disapeared. Matt

    yeah check manifolds...

at least on TD5 a leaky manifold makes a squeal sometimes like a slipping belt...

mine was making a weird ticking sound, turns out it was the bearing and part of the shaft or something or rather trying to over compensate and it was hitting the side, got a turbo and manifold off ebay for two hundred putting it on tomorrow, if you need info on taking that part of your engine apart ive got the LR strip down manual on PDF pm me if you need it
