Replaced a few manifold studs and gaskets and all was well.
As an aside, in my indecision, I decided to keep the new turbo on as the old one was sure to have suffered some wear after 190,000 ks, so, paid the extra and rested assured that a new turbo must be a good thing.
5 months later and less than 10000kms and the new turbo blows up stranding me in the middle of nowhere.
The long and short of the story is that Garrett now says it was oversped (on a TD5!!) and are reneging on warranty. At least I still have the old one to fall back on.
As I said, check manifolds and then tread carefully.

That is disgusting behaviour i can't believe that would not stand behind their own product ...more to that if it was a real possibility why put it on the td5 maybe the consumer watchdog 'fit for purpose clause could be brought up !!!

how is your muffler? Straight through exhaust whistle as there is no attenuation due to missing muffler. Maybe your muffler has lost its guts.

    Hi guys
I friend of mine who has been tinkering with the tdi's for a while longer than me has told me it is most likely the manifold gasket as there are tell tale signs of oil on the side of the block. So this weekend looks as if i will be doing a gasket . Will give update if it works or possibly more frustrated posts if not

    What goes around...comes around.
If businesses screw around with their customers by not honouring warranties.......then customers dont come back and the word gets around very quickly....
