oil filter always leaking.. gving me the ****s!

I cannot work out why I get oil filter leaks after fitting a new filter on the Disco V8.(serpentine belt)

At first I thought it was oil leaking down from the oil pressure switch. I have eliminated that as a cause.

Next I checked to see if was leaking from the oil cooler pipes. I have eliminated those.

I have tried Ryco, Valvoline and cooper filters, they all leak The Ryco has a thicker rubber o ring than the valvoline one.

I know I'm not over or under tightening the filters. but they always start to seep oil, it seems to start from the filter top lip where it contacts the face of the timing case face. I tried tightening more and loosening more and all the time they leak
Apart from trying silicon on the next filter to stop the leak and possiblity of difficult removal later... I'm lost!!!!

I wonder if the threaded oil pipe from the timing case is machined or just screwed in to the timing case body. If it was screwed in and not fully, maybe the oil filter is bottoming out before it seals correctly, clutching at straws for answers. The sealing face of the timing case is undamaged.
Are OEM filters different to the aftermarket ones??

I have used genuine, Ryco and Cooper oil filters on my 3.5 and 3.9 V8s.

Never had a leaking filter seal.

    some possable causes

    1. when youve removed a filter previously its left its seal behind
    2. the housing it mates to is damaged and leaking
    3. your not cleaning up the sealing surface prior to fiting the new filter
4, the mounting thread is skewed so even pressure is not being put onto the seal
    5. you keep dropping stuff on the replacement filters in the car thus damaging the seal.
    6. you have Guyg like geek muscles and cant do them up tight enough.
    7. you've failed to observe that it is a landrover and the part that you are trying to fit is not supposed to leak oil, since satan has not yet driven to work in a snow plough, it's going to leak.

    G`day

If it were mine i would be looking at the front of the valley and be looking for a track down to the filter .

It is also not unheard of with these serpy belt timing covers to crack and also if aftermarket timing sets are not fitted properly the covers can also suffer .

    Cheers

Add .... also unlikely for the filter seal to be at fault specially if you`ve tried another but the used seal would tell you if it was leaking by its shape , etc .

Are you putting a decent film of oil on the seal before installing the filter so the seal turns with the filter when its tightened and doesnt ripple?

I'd be checking to see if you have 2 sealing rings on there, as Dave said.
I had a leaking filter, Z9, seems the thread was a bit different to the original LR filter, was getting tight before seal had contacted properly. Took out the nipple (threaded piece that screws into the engine (timing cover/oil pump) and the Z9 filter and took to local machine shop and got him to run a die nut down the nipple to match the filter thread, no more leaks, Regards Frank.

    To all the other replies.
I have cleaned, I have checked that no old seal is left behind after removing filter. I do run a film of oil when installing,
I do not have guy geek muscles.
The valley gasket is new, the head gaskets are new. I have degreeased everything and am positive it starts from the filer
The timing case was replaced, I have change oil on all sorts of cars and never had a leaking filter. I have replaced numerous filters on my Disco and they all have leaked.

So Frank, It might be as you say, does the nipple screw out of the serpentine belted timing covers. Any tricks special tools needed?
    Thanks
