the real truth of about a 300tdi.!!

G/Day all, After owning a 130 Deefer for six years, and using it every day for work, plus towing a 18ft van when we get the chance to buzz off for a few days, I have been able to do a unfair comparison with the wifes newly aquired 04 toyo V8 4.7l petrol cruiser..lol.

Now in all due respect, the Toyo is a absolute dream with the van on smooth as, and quiet, Heaps of power, But !! on a recent coast trip of 700ks towing the van the fuel cost was double, and allthough the power is there you can't just plant your foot with the van on anyway, So getting back to the landy with all the noise ,rattles ,oil leaks, the time difference in towing from A-B is not all that far behind the cruiser when driving sensibly. So my thoughts are the 300 tdi for a 2.5 ltr motor is bloody amazing in its pulling ability for a engine that was designed years& years ago, As time goes on you can start to see that they were a very under rated motor compared to some of the stuff thats been produced by other companys in the same eera. Its taken to now to realize this.

    Cheers Sumo

I agree, the performance of the 300 is excellent and the economy better than many "soft" 4WD.

Talking about the Toyota, a friend of my, called in the other day with his Series 100 just out of warranty. The speedo is faulty.....replacement $ 1500

One of the most common questions I get on tours is, "How much fuel do you go through?"
Most people are absolutely gobsmacked when they hear how frugal the Tdi motors are on fuel.

Ive just put new injectors in mine and Im now testing the economy to see how much an improovement it has been.

Ive only done 370kms so when the needle moves off full I'll be able to tell you .

It amazes me that even with clagged 320,000km old injectors I was still pulling mid 13s around town yet a lot of the newer diesels in smaller 4wds are getting that as their normal economy yet mine is 12 years old and mechanically injected.

THese newer ones have great power but have sacrificed economy and reliability to get it.

Long live the 300Tdi, Im hoping mine will .

i agree! lamd rover diesel engine's are towing demons

ive towed some heave loads with the 90, 2.5t and 3.2t, one trip to dorrigo and back via glouster and the other glouster and back. both trips had the fuel usage at 15.5l/100 (mind you i sit on 110kph) i dont reckon thats bad at all!
now on friday i was talking to a bloke at work who dose our solid bobcat wheels, his company has 4 D44 navaras...i wont tell you what he thinks about them.... but he also uses a mates v8 diesel cruiser to tow a double horse float and horse. he gave figures of 350k's and 100L of fuel....you do the math

    cheers phil

My 300tdi disco is brilliant! Around town which is what i do most with 31" muddies i am getting 10L per 100Km... And i did a trip to and back from Sydney with some city driving the load was a little over 2 tonne and we only used 11L per 100K!!!

I was amazed and he has done 320,000K's

I have and will defend the 300 Tdi as mine has been great over the 11 years and 413,000k's that I have had it.IMHO the thing that hurts Tdi's the most is blocked rads,I do mine every year without fail and have not had a single head, head gasket problem and mine has done a lot of towing and alot of miles. My fender is showing it's age but it is from use,not because it is sub-standard.
