Hi,
I am new boy on the block, looking for a bit of engine advice. I have just acquired a LR101FC with the standard 3.5l, 68,000 mile. The engine has a slight smoking issue so here is the run down.
Symptoms Engine –
Run well, sounds good.
Start up is fine no smoke.
Run it for a few minutes and oil smelling smoke from exhaust at idle.
While driving no smoke is evident.
Pulled up at servo for fuel after 15 minutes highway travel– lots of smoke at idle only.
Start up 5 minutes later – virtually no smoke.
Symptoms Others –
Notice drips of oil on bottom of gearbox and signs of recent oil coating over much of the gearbox when buying.
Previous owner said the smoke from exhaust started fairly abruptly a few weeks ago. I felt he sounded genuine, he was up front about it.
After removing engine cowlings I noticed the top of the gearbox was also coated with oil.
It appears there is a major oil leak from the rear valley seal.
I seem to remember something similar happening to mates Rover years ago. The smoke seems to be really evident only when the oil is in the top end of the motor, is it possible that oil could be getting into the intake manifold if gaskets are worn or bolts a bit lose on it?

Any thoughts appreciated.
Thanks and cheers
Peter

G`day Peter ,
Could be more than one thing going on .
The smoke could be a crankcase vent problem .
The oil loss from valley rear could be just a crook seal or a headgasket or a crank vent problem , no order .
If the tin valley moves up and down when the engine is running as in breaths like a your chest does probably a head gasket problem , though vent can effect it also .
Being that your not familiar with the engine as yet it would possibly be a good idea to give it a dry and wet compression test , which will give an idea of the condition of its internals .
If mine , when it was running temp , i`d hold it at around 3000 rpm for 5 or 10 seconds and watch and listen . It may or may not tell anything .
Cheers
Hi Peter
Please indulge me, is the smoke issuing out of the exhaust or off the exhaust?
PLR's test will tell you if you have an oil ring problem, to check for the valve guide problem suggested, travel down a reasonable gradient with with no pressure on the go pedal, at the bottom apply the power and check for the dreaded blue plume.

Hi,
Thanks for the input. I will check out your suggestions.
Yes it is coming out the exhaust.
This evening I warmed it up, I pulled the pipes off the rocker covers that go to the carbies and there is far bit of smoke coming out of the RH bank, 10 times as much as the LH bank.
Cheers Peter
I'd start with a head gasket failure/s between the fire rings and the valley cavity. The smoking / case fumes can be caused by this. I had a D1 (Early one) that the owner was told the engine was no good, pulled the heads and lo and behold 5 of 8 cylinders were leaking into the case, they would suck in oil on the intake stroke too. As PLR says, hold it at 2 to 3 K RPM with no load and see how much smoke comes out the exhaust. I would pull the heads first and get back to us

The Isuzu 110. Solid and as dependable as a rock, coming soon with auto box😊
The Range Rover L322 4.4.TTDV8 ....probably won't bother with the remap..😈
Justin,
Thanks, you are right, I will pull the heads off this weekend.
Cheers
Peter
