    Series LR Engine Swap

    Hi all,
I am currently building a tough VF Valiant Hardtop which has left me with a spare 318 Fireball motor and 918 transmission. I am keen to rebuild this motor and use it in my series 2a FFT. I have read that the transfer case will be up to the job but obviously gearbox, diffs and brakes would probably need to be upgraded. The landy is only used for beach duties and some basic off roading, nothing very serious. I would prefer having a bit more power than the current 4cyl engine.

If anyone has some information especially on the gearbox/transfer case side of things it would be appreciated !

    Cheers,

    Peter

The landy might be scary with that motor... I don't know if the transfer case is up to it, but if your 2a has a Salisbury rear axle that diff should cope fine, and if you have a rover diff at the rear it is not hard to change the axle housing complete. Salisbury rear ends were fitted to LWB hardtops and should not be too hard to get hold of. You can probably leave the Rover diff in the front. The 2a drum brakes were not that great at the best of times if I remember right. You could probably fit the discs from an early disco or RR classic without to much drama I think, though not sure quite how many bits you would need to change. And need to add a booster as well of course.

An easier way to get more power is to fit a Holden red or blue motor, they go in easily and adaptor plates are around. They have a lot more top end power, but not so much torque low down in the rev range. Neither do they weigh anything like as much as a landy motor so the front end will lift up a bit.

Just a few thoughts.... but the best of luck with your project.
