    Recommendations for Extra Batteries

My 101 has a 24v system to run all the standard systems in the car. However, the previous owner also hung a 12v alternator and twin battery system to run things like the LPG, CBs, car radio etc. The 24v system and the 12v system are not inter linked. At the moment I just have a standard 12v car battery to suck up the power from the 12v alternator though the LPG does not actually need the battery to work.

So- I am after advice on what type of 12v battery/batteries to put into the 101 as it is close to being back on the road.

My intention for the 12v system will be as before, in car 12v systems, 12v power to camping accessories, fridge, camping lights etc. I also have a cheap 15,000LB winch that I will be using as a portable winch to be mounted on the front or rear as required. The 101 has the standard PTO winch but I will use the electric winch when required (engine not running) or too lazy to move the PTO cable to from the front to the rear or vice versa - so while these batteries will have to power the winch it will not be a regular occurrence.

So given the above what are the suggestions for 12v batteries and should I get one big battery or two smaller ones and run them in parallel.

    Thanks

    Hi Garry,
I would be looking at getting a sealed deep cycle Gel Cell battery to run your 12V accessories. Gell cell batteries are great, although a little more expensive, but in deep cycle form would be ideal to run your 12v accessories. In regards to size it would depend on space, batteries will be rated in Amp Hour capacity, go for the largest that you can fit but yes you could parallel them up if required.

you hook up a gel cell deep cycler to a winch and give it some stonk for a few minutes and you will destroy the battery..

a matt filled wet cell battery or a traditional wet cell battery will last better against the winch.

Personally ID set it up with 2 normal batteries in parallel so that if you happen to kill your main batteries youve at least got a shot at being able to get a start by swapping the batteries from the 12v system with the ones in the 24v system.

    Thanks for the responses.

So on balance, two large heavy duty - ag type type batteries might be the go - I have the room. The 12v alternator is noting special - maybe only around 50amp so I might increase to a larger one once I am mobile.

    Cheers
