    .... Simply put

    ... NO ... DON'T DO IT ...

You will end up doing more harm than good, IMHO
As the motor gets older ... it's the excess sludge & carbons that keep the motor sealed up ... just before it collapses in a heap and needs a rebuild

If you want a clean motor .... change your oil & filter on a regular service basis

is it a diesel engine your talking about?

if so i use to put 2-3 litrs of diesel in the oil of my old diesel lux, run the engine for 5 min and do a oil change. i got out so much more sludge and crap out when i put diesel in just before the oil change. it was shocking that it was in my engine. i did oil change every 6000k's

the engine had about 400,000ks on it when i sold the car and was still running strong.

if its a petrol engine and really dirty i'd just run some diesel oil in it for a few oil changes as they have more things in to help clean the engine.

A little story on that carbon cleaner "wonder tool in a can"

I was living in Kalgoorlie (many moons ago) ... and being young and silly, decided to give this wonderful stuff a go in my 390 cubic V8 Ford galaxie
(it was a old car still, at the time, but the motor was healthy)

To cut a long story short ... I had to go bush / so I just parked the car in my mates backyard & it was left (Nulon) in the oil / motor for over a week / not driven

When I came back, I flushed it out, and then stuck in new oil
The result was that the Nulon worked, too well .... I ended up with a smokey Joe motor .... It had stripped all the carbon off everything, It never really sealed itself back up again

For what it's worth, l use the nulon engine cleaner everytime. Gaskets are for sealing, not carbon!

Gaskets cant help seal worn rings when your cleaner removes the carbon build up behind the rings.
Micky Mouse goo may be ok when used from new but a quality oil will do the same thing for less dollars

Why on earth anyone would use a kero like solvent in their lubricating oil is beyond me, unless they like to prematurely change engine bearings......

200 and 300Tdi's have a reputation of needing the mains and big ends replaced at around 300,000km even when well serviced.
IMO using an off the shelf flush, or worse, diesel or kero will only bring this on sooner.
I know of only one 'cleaner additive' that may work, or at least isn't harmful according to a very good oil analyst I know.
It goes by the name 'Auto-RX' and is based on lanolin esters (a lubricant) that slowly breaks down and disperses carbon deposits and sludge over about 5,000km or so, so it isn't a quicky flush either.

Just stick to a high quality diesel rated engine oil to keep things clean internally.
