Question What does an O2 sensor do?

Well that is not strictly the question,
I know an O2 sensor reads the level of O2 in the exhaust. What I want to know is what the computer does with the information and what it changes?

The reason for the question is that in the next 12 months I'll be replacing the exhaust so I want to know why it is worth the effort to fit an O2 sensor to a D1 V8 Auto, when I do this?

The O2 sensor allows your engine management system to run closed loop feedback. It monitors the o2 in the exhaust and changes the fuel accordingly. Lack of oxygen means that there is too much fuel too much oxygen means not enough fuel. If you dont use the sensor it will either run too rich or too lean. The fail safe is too rich so most likely will run rich.

Are you sure you have one?

We didn't have one in our D1 v8 auto which was also one of the last D1 builds!
    I thought the o2 sensor was a D2 thing
Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......

I was talking to my mechanic about O2 sensors (as I was having weird problems that ended up being due to a faulty O2 sensor) and he was saying that in the US they are considered a routine replacement part, like an air or oil filter.

Oh and to answer your question, yes, replace it, because as per Slug Burner's post it helps the ECU determine the correct fuel mix.
