Brake pressure reducing valve 82 Rangie

I have had three recon brake proportioning/pressure reducing valve for my 82 Rangie. All have leaked from the front cap. All have lasted about 3 months. Has anyone upgraded to a different proportioning valve? If so, what have you replaced the original with?

    Thanks

    Hi Darryl,

Is this the reducing valve with the Lockheed M/C? If so they are supposedly unable to be reconditioned, but someone on here has had some success.

Will post a link to Paddock's so you can confirm part ID.

    cheers, DL

    Thanks PLR and 350RRC

PLR the numbers as far as I can work out are either 8231 7380 or 3231 7386.

    350RRC it is NRC5352 PROPORTIONING VALVE 82>86 FROM 1ST 4 DOOR
SKU: NRC5352. The others do not sound right.

I am told they can be reconditioned but the problem is sealing the end cap. The Brakes part people I am dealing with have supplied two recon ones and both have failed (leaked). I'm not sure whether to persist with another or give up. I'm trying to find out other's experiences and if it is worthwhile to change the valve to something better, if there is something better.

    G`day Darryl

    How about 3213 738C ?

Our 85 RR did the same thing leaked from the front cap .

I`d be a bit suss of the mob that supplied the reco ones because if the cylinder wall is good and a new seal can be acquired it won`t leak .

I intended to reco the one good one i got but couldn`t source a seal or some reason i can`t remember what for sure and it was only 2 yrs ago .

    I ended up using a secondhand one from a 98 Discovery .

The Discovery doesn`t use the loop pipe that yours has because they have different pipe work .

The number on the Discovery one is 3213 738C exactly the same number as the one on our 85 RR .

If you look for a secondhand one , it would be best to try to see the vehicle because one that has had the fluid chages it should have had is more likely to have good seals in it , though i guess anything that`s around 15 yrs younger should be fairly safe .

    Cheers

    Peter

    I had similar issues.
Mine wouldn't pass fluid easily and was making brake bleeding painful. I successfully cleaned it out myself with the result that the cap leaked. Being a sheetmetal cap they don't take much to knock out of shape which prevents them sealing.
Replacing the cap with a solid machined item (anyone with a lathe can help you here) which is retained by grub screws into the slot will work fine.

I found a better solution with bigger front brake calipers, thus not needing the pressure reducing valve any more.

    proportioning valve

I had the same thing, i went on holidays for two weeks nothing was leaking prior when i got back i looked under the 1984 rangie (as you do with all landrovers )to check for leaks and found that all the fluid had leaked out of the resevior, so i bled all the brakes and it hasnt leaked since been about 3 months now.one of those things you hope will fix itself actually did

Thanks everyone for helping me with this. I going to take the suggestions and investigate the various possibilities. The brake people I am dealing with are confident they can seal it. I know they have done others and they tell me with apparent success, even though most everyone who should know says it can't be done.

It has a two year warranty and they have honored it, so no complaints with their attempts.
