    Spot/Drive position.

I am not sure if this is the best place to post this question...but naturally i am spreading my wings trying to use some different thread locations ...

Ok here is my question. I have 2 spot lights and 2 driving lights they are two combos. I have already got one spot/drive on my bullbar and i was planning on putting the other combo on the top rail of the bull bar with some brackets.

But before i do this i have a couple of things i would like to know. Firstly is there a law which states that the lights can not be placed on this section of the bar? or are only spotties allowed on there or only drive lights?

Once the rules are noted what would be the best way to arrange the 4 lights? i would like to keep it aesthetically pleasing so was wanting to have each light with the other from the same pack.

Cheers guys. (sorry if this doesn't make much sense my head is all over the place atm)

I have no idea about the legal issues, but I have seen some in Perth that have one set of lights in the normal position on the bullbar, with a second set directly above them on the top rail of the bar. This always looks good to me.

The ADR stuff re driving lamps...

    7.3. DRIVING LAMPS
7.3.1. Presence: Optional on motor vehicles. Prohibited on trailers.
    7.3.2. Number:
    7.3.2.1. Two or four.
7.3.2.2. To be used in conjunction with headlamps.
    7.3.3. Arrangement
    No individual specifications
    7.3.4. Position
7.3.4.1. In width no individual specifications.
7.3.4.2. In height: no individual specifications.
7.3.4.3. In length: at the front of the vehicle and fitted in such a way that the light
emitted does not cause discomfort to the driver either directly or
indirectly through the rear-view mirrors and/or other reflecting surfaces
    of the vehicle.
    7.3.5. Geometric visibility
    No individual specifications.
    7.3.6. Orientation
    Towards the front.
    7.3.7. Electrical connections
The driving lamps must be able to be lighted only when the main-beam
headlamps switch is in the “lamps on” position.
    7.3.8. Tell tale: No requirement.
    7.3.9. Others
The aggregate maximum intensity of the main-beam headlamps as
specified in paragraph 6.1.9.1 of Appendix A can be exceeded with the
fitment and illumination of driving lamps. Driving lamps do not have to
    comply with ADR 46/….

So.... from that yes they can go on the top rail as long as they do not cause discomfort when turned on. Which I think quite a few lights would, there are some that are designed that you won't see any of the light emitted from around the rim which are better.

Cheers, this was my plan. But should i have both spot lights on the left or right side then both driving lights on the opposite side. Or should i have them diagonal to each other if you get me?

I would like to know which set up would be best for light out put, i feel that having them diagonal would be the best.

    Cheers.

In NSW you must have your lights set in pairs, with a maximum of 6 main beam lights. The height of these lights is not an issue; however mounting a set on the top rail of your bar could be seen as a protrusion from the bar. Much like fishing rod holders being illegal, so may spot/driving lights if they protrude outside the frame of your bullbar.

I'm no legal eagle (or saint ), so take what I say with a grain of salt

Unless both sets of lights are the same size and look the same, I think you should keep them in pairs.

So one set on the top rail and one in the normal position, otherwise it will look odd with them mixed up.

I also think this will give the best light coverage, as each light (from each set) will cover the same left and right areas in front of the car.

Grover98 I think your plan of diagonal is the way to go so you get a staight spot on each side and a spreed beam on each side. with the mounting try and make them sit behind the bar that way in the bush and if you hit a roo they are a little more protected.

It is not legal to mount lights on top of the bullbar.

Having said that, I have a pair up there...

Some states (Qld comes to mind) take a dim view of anything that is in the driver's line of vision. It is likely that the lights on top of the bar would fall into this category , so I would check with your state authority about this.

Qld. Transport rules are quite definite. No lights may be fitted that protrude over the top of any bullbar. Nothing may interfere with the drivers vision, that is, may be seen from the the position of the driver's eyes. There is a legal definition of this position. Get the "Modifications" brochure, or check their website. The website is a piece of ****. difficult to locate anything unless you know the bureaucratic terms. Telephoning them will gt you the switchboard runaround and a different opinion from every QT officer you speak to. However the legislation and guide to its application are quite clear in print.
