    td5 tapping

    Hi all
    hoping you help me with a noise coming from my td5 defender. Its a tapping from the top end of the motor like the injector cam area. Its a light tapping not harsh or intrusive and not always there. I think it may be associated with a misfire maybe not as and is worse when cold. Its misses when cold but when warmed up its perfect... and no tapping. any ideas?

    is it a constant thing......or more when the turbo kicks in.......?

    check you exhaust manifold for leaks......look for black soot around the ports......



    another way to test......is to get someone else to start it while you look under the bonnet
    for a puff of smoke on start up.........


    how many kms on it......
    and where abouts are you?

    on start up its fine. no smoke puffs and will do it at all revs, most noticable at idle. I have heard other vehicles with the manifold thing and its not like that. Its a bright sounding tap not dull or muffled. The engine has 170ks on it with a new head under warranty at 77k (It had a porous head).
