yep, thats why I reccomend a nice slow drive round for a couple of dozen kays and a recheck before using it properly.
I replaced my front drivers side wheel bearings whilst I replace the grease seal and some gaskets . I took it for a drive on the freeway today and noticed that as soon as I reached 100 kph there was shaking in the steering wheel, and when changing lanes at speed it I also felt this shudder. I doesn't do it a lesser speeds.
I also found that it seems to pull slightly to the left now.
Ideas?
Wheel bearings need re tightening after settling in?

has anyone seen the latest dvd from 4wd action.......?
roothy does the bearings on his truck.........or rather his mate does......
then fits the wheeland takes to it with a sledge hammer........
this is to seat the bearings............which are now loose and need to be readjusted......
what i do is.........when i fit the hub........with the new bearings........
i do it up tight.........then spin it by hand a couple of times........this helps to seat the bearing
cups straight incase they are slightly off..........
then once it all feels smooth.......i back it off and adjust to the correct tension........
always recheck again after a day or two to make sure.......
I will check them again.
Sometimes the seal jams on the edge of the stub and you get a false tightness. Ask me how I know.
BUT you should notice that the brakes are spongy as the looseness knocks back the pads.
Just readjust them.

Hi Guys,
The following is an extract from a LR US service bulletin (the code looks like it came out in 96):
NEW HUB BEARING SETTING PROCESS.
ALL RRC, DISCO, DEF.
1. (after greasing and fitting bearings, hub onto stub) Fit hub washer.
2. Fit hub nut.
3. Torque hub nut to 50Nm (37 lbf.ft)
4. Rotate hub assembly and ensure free rotation with no bearing play.
5. Back nut off 90 degrees and torque to 10 Nm (90 lbf.in). This will give the required end play of 0.01 mm (0.0004 in)
6. Fit locking tab washer.
7. Fit second hub nut and torque to 50Nm (37lbf.ft)
8. Lock both inner and outer nuts with locking tab washer.
The above method is used by a lot of guys on Pirate 4x4. I have the pdf of this bulletin, but don't know how to post it. If someone wants to post it just PM me your email and I'll send it.
cheers, DL

That is what I did without a torque wrench but it still loosened. 10 inch pounds is about finger tight on the wrench.Back nut off 90 degrees and torque to 10 Nm (90 lbf.in). This will give the required end play of 0.01 mm (0.0004 in)
I suspect that either the seal hung or I did not have a bearing track right home. I heard and felt a "clunk" under brakes and went back to check them the next day and found the RH front out by a LOT.
BTW even if you do that they can turn out a bit loose.

when you drift old bearings out occasionally if you're not carefull enough with the drift and hammer you can peen the edge of the bearing thrust seat. This stops you from drifting the bearing all the way home but allows it to "ring home". subsequent driving sees the peening squish back and you get sloppy bearings.

I jacked her up today and pulled on the wheel and couldn't feel any bearing play. I ended up retightinging the nuts again and will see how it goes.

Did you readjust the bearing preload and if so could you wind the inner nut in at all?
