The 2 hub lock nuts with the retaining washer that bends over each nut, yes adjusted the preload. I went for a drive tonight only got to 80kph and no shudder, will have to see it it does it again at 100KPH.

[QUOTE=PhilipA;984432]That is what I did without a torque wrench but it still loosened. 10 inch pounds is about finger tight on the wrench.

mate the spec is 10 Nm not 10 inch pound.

And to clear up confusion there is 1 adjusting nut and 1 lock nut not two lock nuts sorry to be so petty.

when adjusting wheel bearings........do the adjusting nut up TIGHT.......
then spin the hub a few times.........

see if the nut has loosened at all.....if it has......repeat process......

this helps to seat the bearings.......especially if on of the cups hasnt sat flush.......

then when all is good.......back off the adjuster and adjust up properly.....

you need the slightest bit of pressure on the bearing......
not enough to load it up......and not loose enough to have any freeplay.....

then.......when fitting the lock tab and lock nut.......
make sure the adjusting bearing doesnt tighten up when you tighten up the locknut......

the lock nut needs to be done up pretty tight......in order to lock up against the adjusting nut to stop it from moving.......
then the locktab....stops them both from moving.......

    where abouts are you......?
if you are anywhere nearby i can show you how to adjust them if you like.....
you only need to see it once.....its that simple to do......

its easier to see than it is to explain......
and just as easy to do it correctly.....

mate the spec is 10 Nm not 10 inch pound.
You know I am starting to get cranky about people who question everything I write without doing any research.

However I was a bit incorrect.
Quote from OFFICIAL LR WORKSHOP MANUAL 1987 onward
SECTION 51 REAR AXLE and FINAL DRIVE
    page 11
    para 27

" Tighten nut until all end float is removed then back off the nut 1/2 a turn then retighten to 13-15 inch pounds."

If you have retightened yours to 10NM I suggest you go out straight away and set them to the correct setting or your bearings will be toast in short order.

The following is an extract from a LR US service bulletin (the code looks like it came out in 96):

    NEW HUB BEARING SETTING PROCESS.

    ALL RRC, DISCO, DEF.

    1. (after greasing and fitting bearings, hub onto stub) Fit hub washer.

    2. Fit hub nut.

    3. Torque hub nut to 50Nm (37 lbf.ft)

    4. Rotate hub assembly and ensure free rotation with no bearing play.

    5. Back nut off 90 degrees and torque to 10 Nm (90 lbf.in). This will give the required end play of 0.01 mm (0.0004 in)

    6. Fit locking tab washer.

    7. Fit second hub nut and torque to 50Nm (37lbf.ft)

    8. Lock both inner and outer nuts with locking tab washer.

The above method is used by a lot of guys on Pirate 4x4. I have the pdf of this bulletin, but don't know how to post it. If someone wants to post it just PM me your email and I'll send it.

    cheers, DL

??? My RAVE says for Disco
Fit Hub Adjusting nut Tighten to 61nm, back off 90 deg then tighten to 4nm, this will give the required hub end float of 0,010mm
Fit Lock washer, then fit lock nut and tighten to 61nm

This is a Landrover technical update not contained in RAVE. Its a technical update bulletin that is not in RAVE and is a pre advice for the next workshop manual.

    The specs are correct.

    Cheers

    Andrew.
