    Lower swivel pin bolt Nm?

Iam in the process of rebuilding both swivels and the RAVE suggest 78 Nm for the lower bolts but when I was doing them up it just didn't feel right, but then snap I broke a bolt.

After dismantling and drilling/taping the old bolt and getting it out, lucky I had some spare bolts.

I double checked the torque wrench and it was correct, I also tightend the top bolts with the recommended 78Nm without a problem.

Does anybody know if this is correct cause 78Nm seems a little high for the lower bolts?

Also on my search for a answer to the above question which I did not find I found weeds post on modifying the top brake bracket so you dont have to undo the top swivel bolts to move the caliper, also means you dont have to bleed the brakes but the pics arent there anymore.Do you just slot the bracket were the line bolts to with a angle grinder?

Its a 1994 defender if that helps...

    Cheers Aaron

    Aaron ...
I don't understand why you have to disconnect the brake hoses from the brake callipers ...

I'm going out on a limb here ... So I am looking for others to correct me

If you want to remove the swivel ball .... In a RRC ... which should be very similar to yours

    Crack wheel nuts
    Jack up car
    Put on stands
    Undo wheel nuts
    Remove wheel
Undo / remove steering arm ball joints

Undo bolts to the stone guard plate, inside of brake disc

Undo & remove the half shafts (the half drive shafts going into the CV)

At the back of the swivel ball are 6? small bolts holding the swivel ball wiper seal
Undo bolts & remove wiper seal

At the TOP of the swivel ball are the swivel pin bolts ...there is a right angle bracket supporting the brake hoses.
The bracket has bent tabs up against the swivel pin bolts
Flatten the tabs away from the bolts
    Undo the TOP swivel bolts
Remove bolts to release the brake support bracket
(Also disconnect & remove wiring to ABS & or brake pad sensor)

At the back (inside) of the brake calliper, is 2 bolts holding it to the swivel ball housing
    UNDO those 2 calliper bolts

Grab a thick (coat hanger) wire .. and lift the calliper off the Brake disc hub & suspend it above / out the way of the swivel

LEAVE ALL BRAKE HOSES CONNECTED ... No need to bleed brakes

Now pull the TOP swivel pin out ... and the whole lot should fall down .. releasing the BOTTOM swivel pin from the housing ... complete with disc brake hub / wheel bearings / etc

Is this procedure not correct for his Defender??? ...

Its more a "Duty of Care" issue. If they said "Hang calipers from wires, bending back the hoses till they have a sharpish bend in them, or alternatively just hang calipers from the hoses..." they may just end up in a law suit... or 2.........!!!

All factory manuals are based around an assemble/dismantle practice. A workshop manual from a Skoda a friend of mine had in the UK nearly required engine removal for everything except turning the ignition key!! No joke!!!

    "Change spark plug:
    1- Remove the engine
    2-change spark plug
    3- refit engine

    Change spare tyre:
    1- remove engine...... "

    I hear ya ....

"Duty of care" would also include being a certified / qualified mechanical engineer

Good point on the hoses ... Never "stress" them

Thanks for your answers guys I found pic/information on a UK board on modifying the brake bracket.I wanted to do this mod so in future I dont have to remove the upper swivel pin bolts to remove the brake caliper also dosent change the preload on the swivel bearings.

As far as the bottom bolts are concerned I will just do them up tight.

Also these are the posts which may explain what I mean...
    front brake line bracket mod

    Swivel housing

    Thanks again guys

Hope you picked up in the method that I describe that you only have to undo the Top swivel bolts ... to get the swivel body off ...

No need to touch the bottom pin bolts

Thanks Mike but Iam rebuilding whole axle including sanding and respraying axle housing, swivel housing, brake bracket, lower brake shield braket, brake sheild, top off lower and upper king pins and also brake calipers.

So iam replacing all bearings, gaskets and seals including lower king pin gasket which ment I had to undo the lower bolts.

Iam not doing this job half as*d as this is my family/tourer so it needs to be reliable and with 340k on the clock while its off the road getting some cancer cut out thought I would spend a few dollars on the old girl.

Theres a list of other things Iam replacing as well but this would be a long post and I dont want to bore you .

This was copied straight from the page and has not copied properly but you get the idea but yours seems more correct Ron 25Nm sounds more sensible...
