    could it be the alternator....?

    does the noise change if you have your lights on.......?
    try it with as many eletricals as you can.....eg....lights fans cig lighter etc.....
    this will load up the alternator......

    also......what engine is it.......?
    diesel.....? may have something to do with timing belt.....?
    which is just behind the fan belt......

    just throwing ideas around.......without hearing the noise its not easy......

    If I understand correctly the engine here is a 300Tdi. The squealing sound is most likely coming from the water pump pulley (try spraying some WD40 on it and it will stop. Temporarily.). The reason is an ever so slight misalignment of the pulley. Not uncommon on this engine. You may have to purchase a new water pump to get things sorted for good as the bearing may be worn out.

    Cheers

    It is very common for the 300tdi to do this. Gates belts seem to sort it. My Dayco was a bugger for it but the britpart one on now seems quiet for now. I use chalk dust from a building supply place to shut them up temporarily or some use talc . If the chalk does not work then yes there is another issue.

    <snip>

    Everyone on here reckons this, but I've found the exact opposite. Gates squeaked and kept squeaking after a belt change and a Dayco fixed it
    I'll only use Dayco now

    Nope, I'm the same. Gates belt was the worst I ever put on in terms of squeaking and squealing, Dayco was much better (but still not perfect).

    Turned out my almost new auto-tensioner was slightly misaligned - apparently the manufacturing tolerances are such that this isn't entirely uncommon - so after reading a few threads on a uk landy forum, put a 5c coin at about the 9o'clock position behind where the tensioner sits against the block to change the alignment slightly, and haven't heard a peep since. Having re-read your original, this doesn't really suit your symptoms, mine was worse at start up and got better as it warmed up, and definitely worse when wet.

    Try a little talc on the belt - if the noise goes away (temporary) it would most likly suggest something is slightly out of alignment and noise if from lateral rubbing of belt. Otherwise, maybe try taking the belt off, and running the engine when COLD without the belt for a short period of time (I wouldn't go more than a minute), if the noise is absent, its something to do with the belt/pulley/bearings. If it persists, its most likely not belt related or anything the belt contacts.

    Good luck!

    To be honest I have never used a Gates belt, its just the advice I was given. I haven't heard a peep out of the britpart one on now but my Dayco was shocking. My symptoms were when wet and cold as well, usually. It went away once it got dirty, usually. My disco 300 tdi did constantly after I half drowned it. probably spent half an hour running up to the seats in water and once I got it out it squealed all day every day until I sold it. never made a peep before then. Chalk would sort it for a day or two and everything checked over and was fine. Sold to a mate, still squeals still runs fine.
