    Bent Recovery Point

After the antics on the weekend I've got a couple of bent bits.

One of them is this front recovery point.

We had to winch the Disco from a 45degree angle as it was nosed into the bank. It was an gentle easy winching so I'm a little surprised at how much its bent.
If I had known how easily it would bend I would have bridled it with the other point.

    Do I:
    - Toss it and make a decent, slightly shorter one from some 12mm plate
    - Just straighten it and refit
    - Straighten it and weld a bit of plate down its length so it can resist side loads better.
    - Or some other brilliant idea that I haven't thought of

I think the old one is for the scrap metal bin only. I'd buy (build if you are able to, I'm not) a new one, preferrably a bit stronger. But, as said, discard the used one, it's damaged.

There are people who spend all weekend cleaning the car.
And there are people who drive Discovery.

If it's anything like a rover draglink/steering arm after it's been bent once they bend like cheese the next time

I would bash it straight . The position you had the disco in was a rare thing and the recovery point will still be heaps strong enough to use endless times . It's only a bend not a break .

Make a recovery point that has the pin hole for the shackle in the Vertical position, Not Horizontal like you have it now, The best way is to box in the back of the bull bar where it meets the front of the chassis and strengthen the area and use a "Collared Eye Bolt" bolted through the bullbar in the strengthened area. You are damaging your shackles as well by pulling them sideways against the recovery bracket hole, if you have the shackle with the pin vertical the shackle will align itself with the line of pull, Regards Frank.

If there is any question, replace. There can be a lot of forces in play on your recovery points.. Its just not worth the risk...

Hey Mick - might be a rare position for the general population - but you've seen how I drive

I'm too scared to just straighten and refit. I have visions of the various things I've bent over the years (non 4wd stuff) that have just snapped off like chalk after they've been straightened.

All the other points I've seen of similar design are at least 12mm thick and much shorter, so less likely to bend.
If this one goes back on its either going to have some reinforcing, or be welded to the identical one from the other side to make a thick one.

Fair enough mate . to keep the cost down you could straighten it and weld some more steel into it like you said .

Thanks Frank. The point about the shackle orientation is a good one - I read the same thing somewhere very recently.
Unfortunately I don't have a bullbar yet which is why I have the current points. The Disco also has SRS airbags so I'm limited in the choice of bars and what I can do to modify them.
I agree that the best way is to get the recovery point in line with the chassis rail - no leverage/bending etc (and also easier to access), but for the time being I'm stuck with this style of point so just have to make it as safe/secure as I can for all concerned.
