Stue made no noise but dumped its diff oil

I took my 7 y/o son to school which is 5ks round trip. Start Stue (91 3 door disco) and drive gently down the road, we often chat about the day etc (son & I, not the car!)

Stue gave what I thought was a misfire, unusual but went away, as it was cold didnt think twice about it.
Get home make a cuppa and open the shed to start work and see a PUDDLE of diff oil in the drive and it just happened as the underside was pretty clean. It has cracked the back housing on the lower crown wheel

The diff has an ARB air locker in it.

Prior to this the diff started to weep around the pinion seal about three months ago and really that is the only issue, Stue's been serviced and oil changed recently could this be the cause???
How much does it normally cost to fix??

Bit hard to tell, but it does sound as if something has come adrift in the diff and been forced against the housing, cracking it. No telling what other damage it has done, so any estimate of the cost is a wild guess. I would tend not to drive it until seen to! Note that you can safely drive it as a front wheel drive by removing the rear prop shaft and half axles, and using the diff lock, but handling is likely to be affected.

Sounds like you may have a bolt out of crown wheel back out. .

Yea I just read the post properly. This happens when you drift in and out during the day. I need to take the time to read the post properly

Now I'm thinking a bolt has backed out of cwp

Yes as it happened basically at home, I have just sent it on a tow truck. Going on the theory less damage is best. Yes it already has the ARB locker in it, which I thought would be better than standard!

If 24 spline they are good

. I hope for your sake the CWP are unharmed. You could be lucky as there was no noise.

and also makes it interesting taking off from a standstill in the rain.......

even more so if its a turbo.......

I just got the news and here it goes!
Some incompetant moron didnt clean the diff housing properly when it must of blown a diff previoulsy and had the locker fitted. There was 1 tooth that was not from my diff as they are all still in tact.

Glad I didnt drive it hard that morning, then once I noticed it I left it then got RACV to tow it for me (Total care is really worth it) to the mechanics 30ks away which could have destroyed the diff.

So it is a pull down reweld the housing and refit the diff. Thats it!!!

What is weird is that it lasted 4 years with out picking that one rogue tooth up.
