My defender 130 did the same no noise till the bearing seized.

Got it towed to landrover and they told me its quite common for this to happen

All good reasons to go to oil lubed hubs (as I have on my 10/87 RRC).

Then you know that the bearings are lubricated, rather than just hoping they are as with grease.

G/day Big jon, My swivel hub axle seal was totally shot so oil has been running into bearing area, mixing with what grease was in there, what a sloppy mess, but i think contamination is a big concern with just oil in there. Some have no probs what so ever but i think iwill just keep the grease going but inspect say every 30,000ks.

    cheers Sumo.

    Contamination of what?

I am about to check my oils after a play in the mud on the weekend. Worst case there might be some water in there. If that is the case I will drain the oil and refill with fresh oil.

No dismantling to clean and regrease, just remove and refit a couple of plugs.

But thats the thing if water, or muddy water has seeped in and worked its way to the hubs , draining the oil is not removing the grit sand and whatever else it just drops in the cavitys and gets picked up again with the new oil!. Bit like a excavator working in mud all the time and the final drive seals fail, 12mths later the bearings are shot no matter how many times you change the oil.

    Cheers Sumo.

That is still eleven months more than you would get with the same contamination in grease...
