Have you tried a squirt of CRC on the belt when the squeek is occuring.I used to worry about all thesqueeks on start up and as engine warming.My mech an experienced landy mech showed me with a coulple of well placed squirts of CRC that the noise was indeed coming from the belt.ie Squirt -non squeel -but returned later till engine was warm.
Don't notice it now as it's a recognised no worrios noise

Check to bottom right hand corner, just under the radiator (you are sitting in the car), if the pipes get soft they can lose flex and if they move a little upward the fan will catch them and rip them to bits. Luckily when it happened to me I had an EMS installed! Beep-Beep stopped and whalla, no coolant, even better my mechanic was like 5 minutes away!

It just never stops.
My only cure is to drive Ernie (no brakes in Burt :p have to do something about that sometime as well). With all the rattles, bangs, squeaks and whines in a Series I all you can think about is how bloody uncomfortable the bloody seat is :p
guys seriously its not you average squeek......otherwise I would live with it like i do all my other rattles and squeeks like the ones in my seat and the one behind the dash.
we took the fan off and it was the same..noise still there.
we took the belt off noise has gone.......BUT we have just had another pull on all the pulleys and the pulley that takes both belts and holds the fan has play in it its not much but there is play you have to give it a pull with both hands.
I think this one is joined to the timing cover......So even if this is not the culprit I think I should get this sorted and perhaps bring forward the timing belt change which was due in the next couple of thousand.
perhaps this is why two of my other belts along the years have had the outer edge chewed ever so slightly.
Does anyone think this could be the cause?

I pressured cleaned my engine once (accually the last time) and it made so much noise when I first started it, I thought I had left the spray lance in the fan, took about a week to disapear completely but was left with a squeeling belt issue.

I reckon that it may be one of those noises that you can let develop to a more advance stage and in the mean time hope like hell it disapears
Just enough of a spray to isolate the fact that is a belt squeel and nothing more sinister like idler bearings.My tdi has a start up squeel not loud which dissapates as engine warms.No worries all well after 20k on this belt.

its not a squeel though........well I certainly wouldn't describe it has one more like a tinny knock. like something is catching.
bblaze: I haven't actually washed my engine bay yet if your reffering to the fact that I asked about it in another thread.
Hmm, hope its not, but sounds like the bearing in the timing case Lou.
At least these days you don't have to buy the whole bloody case (which used to be $440 about four years ago)
The bearing itself can be procured at around the $100-115 mark. (It's a special)
Of course the case has to come apart to do it.....
