    ok ANOTHER problem

    OMG!!! its never ending

I just want to ask......If a viscous fan is failing is it possible that it can make a noise?

changed a belt and tensioner the other day. All was good when we run it up (but at that time I dont remember whether or not we had the fan on I think we had it off so we could see all pulleys more clearly and check the belt was running straight)

    So fan goes back on.

Next day start the car up to drive it and on tick over a funny tapping/ticking/hi tinny catching on something noise starts like something is lose. we go around and check everything! its coming from the serpentine belt area but cannot pin point it everything seems fine nothing seems loose can't see anything else that might be making this noise, the belt seems to be running free and straight from what we can see. the noise doesn't appear in time with the slight bounce I have on my tensioner.

Drive it 5 mins up the road and the noise disappears completely not to return until the car is cooled and started up again.

noise does not dissapear when a few small revs are put on.

So I'm thinking mmmmmm so noise disappeares when engine is up to temp thats a lead.

The this morning noise loudest it has ever been really sounds like something is clanging around in the engine bay.....so this time I pull off the drive (noise still there) and I pull away and then with in about 300meters i put pressure on the car to go quick only for a second or two enough to get revs up to boost range. And the noise gone!!! the engine was not up to temperature.

So after just having a winge to my friend at work who knows nothing about cars she said (stupid I know) that she gets a sound like I describe with her fan in her electric oven until the oven warms up...she said that it sounds like the fan is hitting/catching on the over even though it isn't. And as soon as the oven warms up all is good and her sound disappears.

This made me think could the noise be from the viscous fan? I figured one way to tell is just take it off and start the car from cold if the noise isn't there turn it off straight away re-fit the fan and see if it comes back.

But I just thought I would ask first.....the only other thing we though was sticky stuff on the belt as it has that kind of parcel tape noise tapping on something in the breeze type sound....but then I wouldn't expect the noise to get louder as the days go on.

I love my car its just cant break normally always gives us little niggly things that we have to chase

Unless the fan is catching on something, I doubt it will be causing the noise.
Normally when the viscous goes it doesn't really start to make a noise, the fan just doesn't spin as hard when hot.

You need to pin point the noise if possible.
As you said, remove the fan and see if that helps first.
Then the serpentine belt, recheck noise.
and lastly the a/c belt, recheck for noise.

Sometimes a noise comes from the flat side of the belt contacting an idler.

When I changed my a/c belt I got a noise when cold at startup that dissappeared a minute or two later.
It was the new surface of the flat side of the belt sort of squeaking as it passed the tensionor pulley when cold.
I roughed up the belt surface a little, noise changed but still there.
I then roughed up the surface of the pulley with some sand paper, noise almost completely gone, just there for a few seconds now when starting on a cold morning.
Putting water, talc, belt grip, would quieten the noise for a minute and then it would be louder than ever.

no I just don't ask him as he likes to take the **** out of us all the time

I'm curious also as to why everyone thinks Phil fixs my car......phil has never worked on my car apart from once putting a multimeter on and brasing up a bend for us on my power steering pump and once or twice helped fitting accesories

He helped Ian with his blown head gasket and helps Ian with things he has never dealt with before.....but we certainly dont run to him everytime something breaks..(trust me having 3 cars we have a few brakes)

We are capable of fixing things!!..and what is to bigger job for us it goes into ATV

This is not a swipe at you tony its just I have seen this type of comment like 3 times this month...And it getting a little irritating.

grab a large candle, while the engine is still warm and idling hold the candle to the flat side of the serpentine belt.

once youve got the belt delt with shut it down and off to bed.

that should change the squeel if its related to the belt or the back side idlers.

If that gives no change then rub a bit on the groved faces of the various pullies and start it up.

IF that changes nothing then you're looking at either a bearing or tensioner issue.

viscous fans can make some funny noises but as mentioned they usually just loose their grip and dont pull as well when they're expected to work hot.

Try dusting the belt with Talcum Powder.
It will make it smell nice!!!!

It will also help the belt grip better and may help with an answer.
