When you took the belt off and the noise stopped, was it just the serpentine belt you removed?
the serpentine belt and the Viscous Fan......
It still could be a noisy belt BUT i need to get the play fix regardless as I imagine its only going to get worse...besides going into the garage if the noise is still there when its done then maybe they can chase it as we have looked at everything...
oh and other belt and tensioner (old one) was chirpping really loud also thats why we hurried to get it changed to the new gear...as it was only supposed to have been an interim thing anyway

Front timing cover, fan bearing in the cover......
what i did to fix mine......
Drill the case, put a grease nipple in it, fill it with grease until it comes out the front.
Hope it has not spat the rear seal out and filled your timing belt up with grease.....
Smart way is to remove the cover and do it off the car, then you know it will be ok......

Dullbird - FWIW I had a loud intermittent "clicking" noise like you describe (300Tdi) and be buggered that it disappeared after a new tensioner and belt was fitted. There is no way in the world I would have believed a serpentine belt could make that noise but it seemed to be from the backside of the belt "rubbing" on a slight angle across the tensioner pulley.
Now when I fit a new belt the thing runs really quiet until I do one of the following;
1. Degrease the engine bay. (It seems a really dirty belt runs quiet)
2. Drive up Teewah beach in fluffy sand. (The sand strips the back of the belt and it gets hard and shinny, as does the tensioner wheel, and the only way to get it quiet again is to "roughen" or "deglaze" the tensioner wheel surface or fit a new belt - both ideas do not last long, neither does a spray of belt dressing)
I was surprised one day after a trip through the bog at Glasshouse that everytihng was really quiet with a good coating of mud and slop.
So it seems to me the squealling belt is not a LR fault - the car is actually "crying" out for you to take it out for a play in the muck where it seems happiest. :)

I think from reading elsewhere here that the bearing is a common ford EA/EB bearing with a slightly longer shaft that needs to be cut down but is 1/4 the price of the landy part.
i'm not doing it myself so I will just leave that up to the garage
